Karnataka Premier League (KPL) controversy is getting deeper with the time progress. Now, the 30-year-old Indian pacer Abhimanyu Mithun has been summoned for questioning on this matter.
This year’s Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and KPL have come under scanner after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) got the reports of players’ approaches by some suspicious persons. With the time progress, the investigations have revealed many negative chapters in KPL. The investigations have opened up betting and spot-fixing scandal in KPL.
According to the investigation reports, it is believed that some players have been honey-trapped which bookies have utilised to blackmail them for fixing the games.
In September, Belagavi Panthers’ owner Asfaq Ali Thara has been arrested. Later, six more persons have been arrested, including four cricketers. These four cricketers are CM Gautam, Abrar Kazi, Nishant Singh Shekhawat and Vishwanathan. CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi played Ranji Trophy for Karnataka. The other two arrested persons are Bengaluru Blasters’ bowling coach Vinu Prasad and Bellary Tuskers drummer Bhavesh Bafna.
Now, Abhimanyu Mithun has been summoned for questioning on the matter of betting and spot-fixing scandal in KPL. In this investigation, it is the first time when an international cricketer has been summoned.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil has confirmed this news as he said, “Yes, we have directed Mithun to appear before the CCB for questioning.”
Abhimanyu Mithun played nine international matches for India
Abhimanyu Mithun made international debut for India in February 2010. The right-arm medium pacer has played four Tests and five ODIs till 2011 where he has taken nine and three wickets respectively.
In the KPL 2019, Abhimanyu Mithun led Shivamogga Lions. His team ended their journey in this tournament after losing the Eliminator match against Hubli Tigers.
A Central Crime Branch (CCB) officer claimed, “We have prepared some questions for Mithun about his game during the last KPL season.”
In his professional cricket career, Abhimanyu Mithun has played 95 first-class matches, 91 List A games and 67 T20s. The 30-year-old is currently playing for his domestic team Karnataka in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. On Friday (29th November), they are playing the semi-final of this tournament against Haryana.
