After showing strong character in Test cricket, Hanuma Vihari is ready for the ODI challenge. However, the 25-year-old wants to keep the focus on for Test cricket.
In his early Test career, Hanuma Vihari has earned success. After playing six Tests, he has scored 456 runs (average 45.60) and also taken five wickets. He made debut during The Oval Test against England in September 2018. Right from that game, Vihari has shown his top qualities.
Recently, during the India tour of West Indies, Vihari played outstanding cricket. In the two-match Test series, Vihari finished as the leading run-scorer who scored 289 runs in four innings with an average of 96.33. While India won that series by 2-0, the right-handed batsman scored 32, 93, 111 and 53* runs.

Vihari believes that the ODI opportunity isn’t far away from him if he can perform consistently in Test cricket. While he knows that only the selectors and team management can take this decision, he is ready for the ODI challenge.
Vihari said, “It”s up to the selectors and management. Whenever they want me, I am ready for the challenge. What is in my hands is Test cricket and if I can keep performing I can open the doors for one dayers but it’s up to them.”
It feels great and I just want to keep contributing – Hanuma Vihari
Experienced cricketer Ajinkya Rahane was also in the form during that tour. But Vihari finished on top of everyone while Rahane scored 271 runs in four innings (average 90.33) and finished as the second most run-scorer in that Test series.
The top two-ranked Indian Test batsmen Virat Kohli (136 runs) and Cheteshwar Pujara (60 runs) were not even close of him in that Test series. However, Vihari doesn’t want to compare himself with these experienced cricketers. He just wants to focus on his contribution to the national team.
He added, “They have done it for the last 7-8 years so I don’t want to compare or something, but it’s a good feeling to contribute and help the team. I had a substantial score in both the Test matches. It feels great and I just want to keep contributing. The numbers don’t matter you want to contribute for the team and help them win.”
Due to his great batting performances, Hanuma Vihari has earned huge points in the Test batting rankings. After the second and final Test of that series, Vihari moved up from 70th to 30th position in Test batting rankings. However, in the latest Test batting rankings, Vihari is in the 28th spot.
