Former World Cup-winning Australian captain Allan Border has now raised his voice over the financial crisis in the Cricket Australia (CA). The 64-year-old confidently believes that many other people on the board were also similarly responsible for the present crisis in the CA, apart from Kevin Roberts. He recently stepped down from the CA CEO post.

After James Sutherland finished his term as a CA CEO in October 2018, Kevin Roberts was appointed. However, after handling this chair for 20 months, Roberts left the post on last Tuesday (16th June). One of the major reasons for his removal was the CA financial crisis which led many sacking and salary cut.

Allan Border questions how a board can face a sudden financial crisis while the board had a good amount of money in the bank only a couple of years ago. While Roberts has been removed from the board due to this issue, Border feels that some other people are also similarly responsible for this sudden financial crisis. The former Australian captain even particularly blamed the directors of the board.

Border told Fox Sports News, “You can’t just lump it all on Kevin Roberts. Surely there’s other people, particularly the directors of the Australian cricket board. Where’s their culpability in all of this?”

“It was only a couple of years ago we had a couple hundred million dollars in the bank, then all of a sudden we’re broke by August this year? I just can’t quite work it out. We’re in off-season as a sport, and all of a sudden we’re losing money hand over fist from a very strong position just a couple of years ago. I just can’t work out where all the money’s gone.”

Border confidently feels that the present broadcast deal is enough to cover yearly expenses. So, the former Aussie captain is very surprised after understanding the present financial crisis.

He continued, “There’s a huge television rights deal. That should be enough to cover expenses, surely, from year to year. To me it just doesn’t ring true that you can be in such a strong position one minute (and then this).”

Border directly asked the question where was the money gone in a very short time.

He questioned, “So, at the end of last season where were we at financially, and the start of next season hasn’t happened yet – so what’s happened in the meantime apart from sacking lots of people? Where’s the money gone?”

It’s not just the CEO: Allan Border

Border further added the CEO was not only responsible for the financial decisions as the directors were also similarly responsible for this.

He claimed, “Kevin Roberts has been the CEO through that time … (but) some of the directors have got to be squirming at the moment. At the end of the day they sign off all those financial decisions. It’s not just the CEO. There’s got to be some others that fall on their sword as well.”

The CEO of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 local organising committee Nick Hockley has been appointed as the CA CEO for the interim period.
