The 41-year-old former Indian left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra praised the present Indian captain and Head Coach pair – Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri. Recently, he talked about the reason for their success as a pair.
While Virat Kohli is handling the Indian captaincy role in all the formats from early 2017, Ravi Shastri joined the team as the Head Coach after the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Since then, the cricket world has seen a strong bonding between them as both are supporting each other which has created a friendlier atmosphere in the Indian team. The Indian national cricket team has already achieved some good success in the presence of this duo.
Recently, Ashish Nehra, who retired from international cricket in November 2017, talked about the supportive natures of the Head Coach Shastri and the skipper Kohli. According to Nehra, while Shastri gives the Indian captain enough space, which Kohli likes the most; the Head Coach motivates the cricketers to bring the best from the players.
The former left-arm pacer Nehra believes that both have similar personalities which help them to become a strong pair for the national team.
In the Star Sports’ Cricket Connected chat show, Nehra said, “Ravi Shastri gives Virat Kohli his space, that he needs. Virat Kohli knows the type of person Ravi Shastri is and what can be extracted from him. Ravi Shastri is a great motivator, that is Ravi bhai’s strength. He gives you a lot of confidence. If you are stuck in quicksand till your neck, he will ask you to push with your hands twice and you would come out. Virat Kohli also likes leading from the front. Both have similar personalities. So, it is very good between the two of them.”
It’s not like that the captain is the last decision-maker or coach is the last decision-maker: Ashish Nehra about Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli
Nehra, who was also the bowling coach of Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) between 2018 and 2019 seasons, also added that they might not agree with all their views, but they listened each other carefully before making any decision.
Nehra added, “It is not that all the time they agree on things but few things you need to let it go. It’s not like that the captain is the last decision-maker or coach is the last decision-maker. For me, it has to be a 50-50 partnership.”
Shastri-Kohli pair inspired the Indian team to win the first-ever Test series and ODI bilateral series in Australia in 2018/19 season. Also, in their ongoing tenure, India mostly dominated in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 but finished as the semi-finalists.
