There are some media speculations that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants to postpone or cancel the ACC Asia Cup 2020 to open the window for the IPL 2020. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani has clarified that only the BCCI and PCB can’t decide the fate of Asia Cup.
The novel COVID-19 or coronavirus has disturbed the cricket world, like the other sports and daily busy life. Still the coronavirus cases are increasing along with death reports, and many countries have no clue how to move on from this crisis.
Already some cricket events have been postponed amid coronavirus outbreak. The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) was initially scheduled to run from 29th March to 24th May 2020. But the coronavirus has forced to postpone the tournament. Even the fifth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2020) also failed to complete as the tournament was postponed before the beginning of the knockout stages.
The ACC Asia Cup 2020, which will be played in the T20I format, has been scheduled to be played in September 2020, just a month before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia. While Pakistan has the right to host the Asia Cup 2020, it will be hosted in any other country due to the request of the BCCI. However, the revised host nation for the tournament hasn’t been announced yet due to the coronavirus outbreak.
While there is the chance of postponement or cancellation of the Asia Cup 2020, the BCCI wants to utilise this window for the IPL 2020. However, the PCB chief Ehsan Mani has clarified that the fate of the Asian tournament can’t be decided only between India and Pakistan as some other countries are also involved here.
Mani said in a podcast that was released by the PCB, “I have read and heard about these speculations but right now just remember that having or not having the Asia Cup is not a decision between Pakistan and India it involves other countries as well.”
It is important to have the Asia Cup if cricket activities resume: Ehsan Mani
If Asia Cup 2020 happens, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a high chance to host the tournament. The PCB chief believes that it is important to organise the Asia Cup if the cricket activities resume soon as the funding from the Asia Cup helps to develop Asian cricket.
Mani added, “It is important to have the Asia Cup if cricket activities resume by then because development of Asian cricket depends on funding from the tournament. It is important for many countries who are members of the Asian Cricket Council.”
Ehsan Mani has also admitted that it is the challenge to organise the Asia Cup 2020, but he is still hopeful for the best.
He said, “We don’t know if it can be held or not. But if the conditions change and we can have the Asia Cup, it must be held as earnings from it are distributed as development funds to member countries for next two years.”
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 is also in the danger of postponement amid coronavirus outbreak. Australia will host this tournament from 18th October to 15th November 2020.
