Many bowlers fear to bowl MS Dhoni when he gets settled down and shows fine touch. Recently, the New Zealand cricketer Corey Anderson has shared his experience during an IPL match where Dhoni blasted him and snatched an incredible victory.
It was the IPL 2018 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bangalore) on 25th April 2018. After the RCB scored 205/8 (20 overs) in the first innings, CSK were struggling on 135/4 in 15 overs, and they still needed to score 71 runs in the last five overs. Both the opener Ambati Rayudu (61 runs off 44 balls) and the skipper MS Dhoni (38 runs off 22 balls) were set in the crease at that moment as they already built up the 61 runs partnership for that fifth wicket.
Since then, the RCB left-arm pacer Corey Anderson bowled three overs (actually 2.4 overs), where Rayudu and Dhoni showed their bossy batting skills. Before that match-deciding spell, Dhoni already hit him for a sixer during the 12th over of that innings. Later, in Anderson’s second spell of that match, Dhoni hit two more sixes. In that game, Dhoni scored 24 runs off just nine balls (strike-rate 266.67) against Anderson, including the match-winning sixer during the fourth ball of the last over of that game.
While the CSK won that match by five wickets, majorly thanks to Dhoni’s 70 not out off 34 balls and Rayudu’s 82 runs off 53 balls, Anderson finished that game with the bowling figures of 3.4-0-58-0. The RCB left-arm pacer failed to defend 16 runs in the last over of that match.
You gain confidence once you bowl to these bigger guys like MS Dhoni: Corey Anderson
Anderson admitted that it was very tough to bowl to Dhoni despite having big minds in his side like the skipper Virat Kohli and another experienced international cricketer AB de Villiers. Though it was a forgetful night for him, Anderson also added that it made him stronger in inside.
In a recent instagram live session with Sportstar, Anderson said, “When you uttered his name, I was about to drown myself in my coffee. He is one of the greats of the game, one of the best finishers in the world. Very difficult to bowl to him. I had Virat Kohli at long on, AB de Villiers at long off. They were continuously running in to say what do we do, what was I thinking, what should I do?
“Even their thoughts were like ‘if you bowl here, he will hit you for a six’ and ‘if you bowl there, he will hit you for a six’. You can subdue the moment. You know that you aren’t the first one, he has done it to every bowler in the world at some point of time.
“Once you bowl to those guys, it gives you a massive insight to bowl to other guys. You gain confidence once you bowl to these bigger guys like Dhoni. At times, it is demoralising but it can make you a better cricketer.”
Unfortunately, it was the last IPL match for Corey Anderson as he hasn’t got another chance in the IPL yet.
During that live Instagram chat, Anderson has also revealed that the South African fast bowler Dale Steyn is one of the toughest bowlers he faced ever.
