Expansion On The Cards As IPL Might Have 10 Teams, Again: Report

The Indian Premier League could again be a 10-team competition as few business groups have shown their interest in investing in the T20 league. As per a report in PTI, the matter was discussed in a meeting in London this week. It clearly means that soon, IPL could again be a 10-team affair.

In 2011, the competition saw an increase for the first time when Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors joined the T20 league. Kochi was withdrawn after just one season while Pune played the tournament till 2013.

Since then, the tournament has remained eight-team affair but an increase in the number of teams is on the cards.

“We discussed increasing the number of teams but it was an informal discussion. Anyway, the teams don’t have the authority to decide on the matter, the BCCI will have to take a call but we are open to the idea,” an official told PTI.

Although in 2016 and 2017, two new franchises took part in the league. Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions replaced Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years. In 2018, the CSK and RR made their comebacks.

It remains to be seen if the owners of these two franchises also show their interest in taking part in the league when the tournament will have two more teams. A possible comeback for Kochi Tuskers Kerala could also on the cards.

As per a report in TOI, Adani Group, Sanjeev Goenka Group and The Tatas are interested in buying the IPL teams. Sanjeev Goenka was the owner of Rising Pune Supergiant that was a part of IPL in 2016 and 2017.

Meanwhile, another news related to IPL made rounds today as Kolkata Knight Riders announced the departure of Jacques Kallis from the role of their chief coach. Along with him, Simon Katich also moved from on the from the franchise. He was assistant coach of the franchise. KKR will soon name a new coaching staff.
