Former South African captain Faf du Plessis has revealed that he had contacted his former teammate AB de Villiers to convince him to come out of retirement and play for the national team.
Although he had the age in his hand, AB de Villiers surprised everyone with his decision to retire from international cricket in 2018. It was a huge set back for the South African team who were preparing for the World Cup 2019.
After the retirement, de Villiers has played several T20 leagues and has shown how versatile and pivotal player he is. Currently, the wicketkeeper-batsman is playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and has earned the new nickname ‘superhuman’ after delivering blistering knocks.
Faf du Plessis opens up that he called AB de Villiers:
After the disappointing end of the South African team in World Cup 2019, Faf du Plessis decided to convince de Villiers to take a u-turn from his international retirement and play for them in the T20 World Cup, which was scheduled this year in October but has been postponed for next year because of the pandemic.
“It’s [trying to convince De Villiers to come back] actually something I did pretty much straight after the 2019 World Cup. After a week of sulking, I was like ‘okay, how can we plan for the next World Cup?’
“Which is the 2020 [T20] World Cup. I got on a phone call with him and I said ‘listen, I’m giving you the heads-up now, the heads-up that you wanted. So, get yourself back to playing T20 cricket for South Africa’,” said De Plessis during a webinar hosted by the South African Business Council.
As the mega event has been postponed, Faf du Plessis has revealed that the talks will be with the 36-year-old to come back and play some game for the national team to take them to the T20 World Cup.
“Right now the leadership group, which no longer requires my WhatsApps and phone calls, would need to just look at how exactly that looks for him.
“I know he was keen to play this year in the 2020 World Cup, but now that’s not happening… So I think what will happen now with the conversations there is just when he can come back and play some games that lead up towards the tournament.”
Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis’s franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a disappointing season as they have been knocked out of the tournament. However, he is the leading scorer for CSK.
