To win the ICC World Cup, it takes sweat of the whole team to lift the coveted trophy. India cricket team has two times got the chance to reach on top and win the World Cup. The Men in Blue won their first-ever World Cup in 1983, under the leadership of Kapil Dev. And, the second time under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, India lifted the 2011 World Cup title.
The team which wins the World Cup is remembered forever. Contributions from players serve as powerful narratives for the youngsters in all the coming years.
However, there are some players from the World Cup-winning teams who have faded away somewhere.
Here, we have discussed Indian players’ careers that almost nearly ended as they failed to play for the Team India again after the 2011 ODI World Cup.
Four Indian Players Whose Careers Ended After The 2011 ODI World Cup:
4) Piyush Chawla
Piyush Chawla was the consistent performer for India before the 2011 world Cup. The promising slow-bowler made the debut for India in 2006. He showed his skills with bat and ball in the international platforms. And earned the place in India’s squad for the mega event.
However, he just got only three chances in the tournament where he picked four-wickets but could not make a huge impact with his bat. And after the World Cup, it was a tough task for Chawla to maintain his place in the team. His lack of consistency let go of his place from the national side.
The 31-year-old has played three Tests, 25 ODIs and 7 T20Is. In ODIs, he snared 32 wickets while in T20Is, he has four wickets.
Meanwhile, Chawla continued his show in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Recently, he has bagged a whopping contract of INR 6.74 crores from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the upcoming edition of IPL.
3) Munaf Patel
2011 was the last year that Munaf Patel, the fast bowler featured in international cricket. Nevertheless, he had a brilliant outing in the 2011 World Cup, where he collected 11 wickets in eight games. Despite his performance in the World Cup, opportunities fell short for Patel to continue his international run.
The pacer had a short career of five years which began in 2006. The 36-year-old bagged 35 wickets, at an average of 38.54 in 13 Test matches.
In ODIs, the right-arm pacer has 70 caps and 86 wickets at an average of 30.26. He hasn’t got many chances in the shortest format, as he played just three matches for India, and collected four wickets.
However, his amazing performance in the World Cup could not give him more chances. Currently, the 36-year-old serves as a coach for Vadodara.
2) Yusuf Pathan
The all-rounder played the maiden match in the T20 World Cup 2007. His consistent all-round performances with both the ball and the bat for the next few years gave him a place in the 2011 ODI World Cup squad.
However, his ineffective performance in the mega event costed him. In six matches, he scored 74 runs and picked only one wicket in the tournament. Since then, he has failed to cement his place in the Indian team.
Talking about his credentials, he has 13 wickets and 236 runs in 22 T20I matches. In ODIs, he has notched up 33 wickets and scoring 810 runs.
Despite losing his place in the Indian team, the allrounder never left playing domestic cricket. He regularly featured in IPL before going unsold in the IPL 2020 auction.
1) S. Sreesanth
Sreesanth was once a first-choice bowler for India in every big platform. But soon his career faced a downfall because of his wrong deeds.
The pacer made the debut for Team India in 2005 and in the following years, he became a key player for India. Every cricket fanatic must remember the catch of Misbah-ul-Haq which Sreesanth took in the finals of the 2007 T20 World Cup.
Initially, he was not included in the 2011 World Cup squad but Praveen Kumar’s injury led the entry of Sreesanth in the mega event. He had some decent performances at the biggest stage of ODI cricket, but his career failed to revive after that.
But his end came near when he was found guilty in the spot-fixing scandal while playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2013.
