ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019: Australian Cricketer Ashton Turner Reveals The Reason For Missing Out The World Cup Squad

The 26-year-old Australian middle-order batsman Ashton Turner has recently revealed the reason for missing out the 15-member Team Australia squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Though Turner made his T20I debut in February 2017, he recently made his ODI debut during Australia’s tour of India in last March. Till the date, he has played three ODIs and five T20Is where he has scored 125 and 26 runs respectively. He has also taken three wickets in T20I career.

During his second ODI (against India at Mohali), Turner played an incredible match-winning knock. When his team was struggling to chase the big target of 359 runs, the right-handed batsman scored an unbeaten 84-run off just 43 balls (5 fours and 6 sixes). His incredible batting helped Australia to win that important match by four wickets.

However, Turner has recently faced a shoulder injury which has restricted him to field and bowl. He has suffered this shoulder injury during the last Big Bash League season (2018/19). Turner believes that this injury has forced him to miss out the upcoming Cricket World Cup.

He recently told foxsports.com.au, “I do understand I’m a little bit limited with my shoulder and that probably played a part in my omission.

“Potentially not being able to bowl probably cost me an opportunity to play a few more games before they had to select the team.”

Ashton Turner also revealed his surprise to continue his cricket despite a shoulder injury

After suffering the shoulder injury last December, Turner thought that he would miss the entire remaining season. He was surprised to continue his game as a batsman for the remaining season.

He added, “On Boxing Day when I re-injured my shoulder, I thought that my season was over and I was going straight into surgery and wouldn’t play another game for months.

“The fact I was able to keep playing the Big Bash and still be on the selector’s radar as a batter was a surprise to me. Then, to pick me in the ODI squad and then to give me the opportunity to play a few games, probably exceeded my expectations.”

Missing out on the World Cup squad has only motivated me – Ashton Turner

Ashton Turner is currently busy in the ongoing IPL 2019 where he is playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR). While it is his first IPL season, he hasn’t experienced it in a good way. In his all first three matches of this IPL season, Turner scored golden ducks. Recently, he finished that streak after scoring an unbeaten three-run off seven balls.

In the next month, Turner will travel to England along with Australia A squad. Australia A side will play five List A matches and three first-class matches in this tour. Turner is desperate to perform better in this upcoming tour which can help him to return to the national squad. After this tour, he will also undergo shoulder surgery.

Though he has missed out the World Cup squad, Turner feels that it will only motivate him.

He said, “Missing out on the World Cup squad has only motivated me more to want to get back there, because being a part of that Australian side was such a great experience. That’s where I want to be.”

England and Wales will host the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup from 30th May to 14th July. While a total of ten teams will participate in this tournament, Australia will play as the defending champions. The record five-time World Cup winners will begin their journey in the upcoming World Cup on 1st June. In their opening game, Australia will face Afghanistan at Bristol.
