India’s middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu, on Wednesday (July 3) has shocked the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from all three formats of international cricket. Well, he has been ignored for at least on two occasions now for India’s 15-member squad announced for the ICC World Cup 2019.
On April 16, the 33-year-old Guntur-born Rayudu vent his frustration by tweeting about ‘3D Glasses’. And that according to many put him in troubled waters. But again, the tweet is still on his official Twitter handle and thereon, and he did not post anything on Twitter till date.
All in all, Rayudu took a cheeky dig at BCCI’s selectors post the provisional squad announcement led by Virat Kohli.
Rayudu had to pay a heavy price for ‘3D Glasses’ tweet:
Just Ordered a new set of 3d glasses to watch the world cup ??..
— Ambati Rayudu (@RayuduAmbati) April 16, 2019
In between, post his World Cup snub, Iceland Cricket has offered Rayudu permanent residency.
Interestingly, the unexpected retirement announcement came when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced Mayank Agarwal as a replacement for all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who picked a toe injury.
Also, Rishabh Pant replaced the Tamil Nadu-based all-rounder for England clash at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Ambati Rayudu makes a call in haste following World Cup snub?

However, Rayudu was one of the stand-by players for the World Cup. Despite injuries to veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan and Shankar, Rayudu has failed to impress selectors to book his flight for the United Kingdom (UK) in a bid to play his maiden World Cup.
Interestingly, in 2018, Rayudu hung his boots from first-class cricket to entirely focus on limited-overs cricket. In 97 games, spanned over 17 years, Rayudu amassed 6,151 runs. He has represented Hyderabad in the first-class leg which further saw him presenting Baroda as well.
Recently, he has been part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he represented this year’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Despite being one of the contenders for the No. 4 spot, Rayudu had failed to feature at the World Cup following his non-selection.
Moreover, in the top-flight cricket, Rayudu has amassed 1694 runs in 55 ODIS averaging 47.05. He also recorded ten half-centuries, three hundreds to his name in the day-long format.
Rayudu has also partaken in the six Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) to collect just 42 runs. In 2019, he has featured in his last ODI against Australia in Ranchi. His international debut came in 2013 against Zimbabwe.
Here’s how Twitter reacted following a shocking Int’l retirement call from Ambati Rayudu:
When Your Frustrated
Be Like Rohit Sharma
Not Like Ambatti Rayudu #Ambatirayudu pic.twitter.com/SQjw3o67kq— Suriya Kanth Singh ?? (@SurajSingh2567) July 3, 2019
Really feel for #AmbatiRayudu. Always gave it everything he had but sometimes was left holding the wrong cards. So hope he continues in domestic white ball cricket so that we can see his wholehearted style of play in the #IPL. This is an emotional moment but there is a tomorrow

#AmbatiRayudu, don't retire, please wait for a day or two.
Jasprit Bumrah, please arrange for Rayudu's entry.— Ramesh Srivats (@rameshsrivats) July 3, 2019

Truly the Pain of rejection.!!
He has average of 50+ in ODIs. Yes,In last IPL his form is not up to the mark, but apart from that he is a pure talent.Considering Pant & Agarwal ahead of him is a crime. #Ambatirayudu pic.twitter.com/GuPO5jrAlI

It's not about what you express, its all about the way you express. Especially on social media. When you become addict of attention and retweets, even your career becomes questionable . #AmbatiRayudu – Action out of frustration is not worth a dime !! pic.twitter.com/AgtjouP5eJ

From retiring from first class cricket to being India's No. 4 to not even being picked in the squad to being overlooked twice, all this in a span of 1 year has ultimately taken its toll. Rayudu is a fine example of a talent that could have been. Damn, I feel bad. #Ambatirayudu

One tweet can lead to a retirement. For a few RTs, for appearing smart against a vindictive cricket board. What a sad end. #AmbatiRayudu
