Though the successful England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan is returning to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side, he has clarified that the present KKR captain Dinesh Karthik will take all the decisions for the side in the forthcoming IPL season.
After the two-time IPL winning captain Gautam Gambhir left the KKR, Dinesh Karthik is handling the leadership role of this franchise since the beginning of the IPL 2018. While they advanced to the playoffs in the IPL 2018 and finished as the third-best team in that tournament, they just failed to qualify for the playoffs in the IPL 2019 (finished in the fifth position in the points table).
However, Karthik-led KKR didn’t ‘perform consistently as they have won 15 matches but lost 14 games too (one tied+lost).
During the 2020 IPL auction, the KKR added Eoin Morgan, whose captaincy was the reason for England’s runners-up in the ICC World T20 2016 and England’s first Cricket World Cup victory in 2019 edition. However, the KKR team management has decided to continue with Karthik for the captaincy role of the team for the IPL 2020.
Morgan recently admitted that he and Karthik have different leadership styles. While the English limited-overs captain is ready to provide the required help to the KKR skipper, Morgan has also clarified that Karthik will make all the decisions during the upcoming IPL edition.
Morgan recently told Harsha Bhogle on Cricbuzz, “I met with Dinesh (Karthik) pre-Christmas and he’s a great guy and a fantastic cricketer. He is the leader at the club. The big thing for me was that he understood that I want to give and help. We have different leadership styles, but ultimately, Dinesh will be making all the decisions and I’ll be like a sounding board.”
KKR hold a big place in my heart: Eoin Morgan
Morgan earlier played for the KKR team during the 2011 and 2013 editions. In 2013 edition, Trevor Bayliss was the Head Coach of the IPL team, later who became the Head Coach of the England cricket team, and during his tenure, Morgan-led England achieved successes in the ICC World T20 2016 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. So, KKR is very special to the English limited-overs captain.
Morgan said, “KKR hold a big place in my heart, not only for the experience I had in three seasons there, but also because I met Trevor Bayliss. It was where our relationship started. When I look back at the time we spent together there, it was invaluable.”
He further added, “The group of players that have now retired, Brendon McCullum, Brett Lee and Jacques Kallis are the guys I learned from. I’m looking forward to getting back to KKR and contributing towards their success.”
Eoin Morgan, who last experienced the IPL in 2017 edition, has played 52 IPL matches where he the left-handed batsman has scored 854 runs (average 21.35), including four half-centuries.
