On Saturday (19th September) evening, during the opening match of the much-awaited IPL 2020, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi).

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni decided to field first after winning the toss. Mumbai Indians managed to score 162/9 (20 overs) in the first innings. In reply, Chennai Super Kings successfully chased down the target in 19.2 overs after losing five wickets.

Brief Scores: MI – 162/9 in 20 overs (Saurabh Tiwary 42, Quinton de Kock 33; Lungi Ngidi 3/38)

CSK – 166/5 in 19.2 overs (Ambati Rayudu 71, Faf du Plessis 58*; Trent Boult 1/23)

  • With this victory, CSK ended their five-match losing streak against MI.
  • The Yellow Army have stretched their unbeaten run in their first match of an IPL season to four. Since IPL 2015, they have never suffered a defeat in their opening game of an IPL season (they missed the IPL 2016 and 2017 due to suspension). Their last such defeat was in IPL 2014, where they lost against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 6 wickets.

i) MS Dhoni has taken 100 catches in his IPL career (96 catches as a wicket-keeper and four catches as a non-wicket-keeper).

  • After Dinesh Karthik (109 catches) and Suresh Raina (102 catches), MS Dhoni becomes the third cricketer to complete 100 IPL catches.

ii) MS Dhoni has made 250 T20 dismissals as a wicket-keeper (167 catches and 83 stumpings).

  • MS Dhoni becomes the first wicket-keeper in T20 cricket history to manage 250 dismissals. 

iii) As a CSK captain, it was MS Dhoni’s 100th IPL victory.

  • Dhoni becomes the first IPL captain to achieve 100 victories for a team.

i) The leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has taken 151 wickets in his IPL career.

  • Piyush Chawla is now the third most wicket-taker in IPL history by surpassing the veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (150 wickets). Chawla is now only behind of Lasith Malinga (170 wickets) and Amit Mishra (157 wickets) in the most wicket-takers list in IPL history. 

 

Ambati Rayudu

i) The right-handed batsman Ambati Rayudu scored 71 runs.

  • It was the joint highest individual score by an Indian CSK right-handed batsman against MI. Earlier, Subramaniam Badrinath also scored 71 runs against this team at Mumbai on 22nd April 2011.
