It’s The Players Who Have Made Mumbai Indians Successful: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper has downplayed his role in the franchise’s success in the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to Rohit Sharma, who was named India’s ODI captain on Wednesday, it is the players who have made MI what they are today.

Mumbai Indians-the most successful franchise in the history of the IPL has won five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, all under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. But they failed to make it to the playoffs in IPL 2021.

Rohit Sharma: Mumbai Indians Team Was Fantastic And Credit Should Be Given To Management For Creating Atmosphere For Outstanding Players To Perform

Reflecting on MI’s success under his leadership, Rohit Sharma said on the show Backstage with Boria Majumdar.

“What I have done at Mumbai is brilliant because of the players I have had. Honestly speaking, I have very little role to play there. The team that I had was fantastic. I want to give credit to, firstly, the management for creating such solid gun players and then creating that atmosphere for players to go and perform.”

Rohit Sharma added that as a leader he does take crucial decisions with regards to batting and bowling changes. However, at the end of the day, it’s all about the players and the team as a whole.

The 34-year-old explained: “There were certain decisions that I had to make – giving the last over, the first over to X,Y,Z… All those things, yes the captain plays a big part in that. Overall, its the players’ team.”

Apart from winning five titles with MI as captain, Rohit Sharma also won an IPL as a player with now-defunct Deccan Chargers in 2009. Rohit Sharma, who was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction in IPL 2022, said it was “heartbreaking” not to be able to hold on to their entire core group of cricketers.

Mumbai Indians retained a maximum of four players, the first of which was skipper Rohit Sharma (Rs 16 crore). The second player on the list was pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (Rs 12 cr) followed by dashing middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav (Rs 8 crore). Mumbai Indians made just one overseas retention in dashing West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard for Rs 6 crore.

Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Anmolpreet Singh, Aditya Tare, Quinton de Kock, Piyush Chawla, Anukul Roy, Jimmy Neesham, Marco Jansen, Adam Milne, Trent Boult, Dhawal Kulkarni, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Mohsin Khan, Yudhvir Singh, Arjun Tendulkar, Rahul Chahar, and Jayant Yadav were the players who were released by Mumbai Indians before IPL 2022 mega auctions.

Rohit Sharma Shared His Thoughts On Captaincy

Rohit Sharma is known as a calm and composed leader, who does not put too much pressure on players.

Asked to share his thoughts on captaincy, the Team India opener explained: “I feel the captain needs to stand at the back. He cannot be at the forefront. In terms of performance, he needs to be at the forefront, but in terms of everything else, he needs to be taking the backseat.

“A captain looks good when the team performs well and bad or horrible when the team doesn’t. I don’t think that is the right way to look at it. The captain is there to make sure that the right players are playing and there are a few tactical things to look after.”

Apart from being named captain of the ODI side, Rohit Sharma has also been chosen as the vice-captain of the Test team for the tour of South Africa. Rohit Sharma has been appointed India’s ODI captain, ending Virat Kohli’s five-year-long white-ball reign.

The decision to displace Virat Kohli was taken by the Indian selectors. In a media release, without detailing the reasons, the BCCI only said the selectors had “decided” Rohit Sharma should take charge of the ODI and T20I teams “going forward”. Rohit Sharma will also take over from Ajinkya Rahane as the Test vice-captain.

Mumbai Indians Will Try To Bring A Lot Of Released Players Back In IPL 2022 Auction: Zaheer Khan

Mumbai Indians had a happy headache when it came to retaining the four players ahead of the 2022 Indian Premier League mega auctions. The side retained captain Rohit Sharma and star pacer Jasprit Bumrah – the two players who probably wrote themselves on the list, alongside batter Suryakumar Yadav and veteran all-rounder Kieron Pollard.

Despite four strong retentions, there were notable omissions as the Pandya brothers – Hardik and Krunal, as well as young wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who were all a part of Mumbai Indians’ renowned homegrown list of players, were released ahead from the squad.

Mumbai Indians Will Aim To Bring A Lot Of Released Players Back In IPL 2022 Auctions: Zaheer Khan Asserts It’s Not End Of Road For Non-ZRetained Players

However, MI’s Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan, has said that MI will be aiming to “get a lot of them back,” in the mega auction. When asked about the above-mentioned players, Zaheer Khan said that it is “not the end of the road” for these players with Mumbai Indians.

“It has been an emotional time for us. You look at the positives of it. A lot of players started their journey here, groomed themselves in the best possible scenario. A lot of them have represented their country, so that’s what you feel proud about,” Zaheer Khan said.

“It’s not the end of the road. There’s still a chance we will get a lot of them back, so that’s the way we look at it. It has been a heartbreaking scenario for sure but all teams have to go through this journey. We’re no exception to that. As a professional player, you understand the dynamics of franchise cricket. (And as a franchise) You tend to do the best in such a scenario,” Zaheer Khan said.

Rohit Sharma was the obvious choice as he is the most successful captain with five IPL titles and also their star batter, who has scored 4,441 runs for the team. However, MI also picked their main all-rounder Kieron Pollard who has won them numerous matches from challenging situations and has smashed 214 sixes for the franchise.

Mumbai Indians ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah was another player that the team couldn’t afford to send into auctions. Jasprit Bumrah has picked 130 wickets in IPL for MI and is one of the fiercest bowlers in the current era.

Suryakumar Yadav is a brilliant player of stroke play and maintained a balance in MI’s batting line-up but had a poor outing in the last season where he amassed 317 runs from 14 games. But the middle-order batsman amassed 512 runs in IPL 2018, 424 runs in IPL 2019, and 480 runs in IPL 2020.

Zaheer Khan Said Mumbai Indians Will Try To Repeat The Same Process And Achieve Success And Points Out There’s Plenty Of Time Before IPL 2022

The former Indian fast bowler further laid down the way forward for the future, saying that the team will be built on the same roadmap which reaped the rewards for the Mumbai Indians in the last cycle.

“The way forward is simple. The things which have been working, you stick with that. And you look ahead. There’s plenty of time for the mega auction. Preparations will start keeping this in mind. The kind of success we had in our last cycle, we will try and repeat a similar kind of success in the coming years,” Zaheer Khan further said.

Mumbai Indians’ captain Rohit Sharma, who was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction in IPL 2022, said it was “heartbreaking” not to be able to hold on to their entire core group of cricketers. MI retained four cricketers – the maximum allowed to each franchise ahead of the mega auction, including Rohit Sharma. The other three retained players were Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard.

But Mumbai Indians was not able to hold the likes of Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, and Trent Boult, all of whom were instrumental in their success in the last few seasons of the IPL. Rohit Sharma (16 cr), Jasprit Bumrah (12 cr), Suryakumar Yadav (8 cr), and Kieron Pollard (6 cr) were retained by MI.

Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Anmolpreet Singh, Aditya Tare, Quinton de Kock, Piyush Chawla, Anukul Roy, Jimmy Neesham, Marco Jansen, Adam Milne, Trent Boult, Dhawal Kulkarni, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Mohsin Khan, Yudhvir Singh, Arjun Tendulkar, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, were the players who were released by Mumbai Indians before IPL 2022.

Many players did not get a chance to play in IPL 2021. They were benched by their teams in all the games they played in the tournament. However, some players among these benched players have a lot of talent and they could form a great team.

Robin Uthappa was picked by Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2021 in a trade deal with Rajasthan Royals. He did not get a chance to play in the 7 matches of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2021. However, Robin Uthappa is a great option for an opener.

Chennai Super Kings wanted to give enough opportunities to Ruturaj Gaikwad due to which Uthappa had to warm the bench. The right-handed batsman Uthappa has a great experience in IPL as he has played since the first season in IPL 2008. In 189 matches, Uthappa has scored 4607 runs which include 24 half-centuries.

Jason Roy

Jason Roy

Jason Roy was another player who did not play any match in IPL 2021. He was unsold in IPL 2021 auction but Sunrisers Hyderabad later picked him as a replacement for Mitchell Marsh. Jason Roy can be a great option for an opener in the team.

His aggressive batting style was quite visible during the ODI and T20I series against India in March. The England cricketer was in great form and thus is a brilliant option for an opener. In 8 matches in the Indian Premier League so far, Roy has scored 179 runs. He played a spectacular knock of unbeaten 91 runs in IPL 2018.

Mandeep Singh

Mandeep Singh

In 104 matches in IPL so far, Mandeep Singh has scored 1659 runs. He has also smashed 6 half-centuries. He will be a great batsman in the team of benched players of IPL 2021.

Krishnappa Gowtham is an incredible choice for an all-rounder. In 24 matches in IPL so far, Gowtham has scored 186 runs and scalped 13 wickets.

Kuldeep Yadav

Piyush Chawla was bought by Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 auction but the team did not feature him in any of the 7 matches. This is because spinner Rahul Chahar was doing a great job for Mumbai Indians. Piyush Chawla will be a great option for the 2nd spinner in the team of benched players of IPL 2021.

Since IPL 2008, Chawla has played 164 matches in the Indian Premier League and scalped 156 wickets. He also knows batting a little so can also play a cameo with the bat if the need arises.

He will add strength to the team of benched players of IPL 2021.

IPL 2021: Ricky Ponting Admits Ravichandran Ashwin Not Bowling 4th Over Was ‘A Mistake’

Ricky Ponting, Delhi Capitals (DC) coach has lamented the fact that despite bowling beautifully, Ravichandran Ashwin didn’t finish his quota of four overs in the side’s loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. This was the seventh match of IPL 2021.

Chasing 149, RR had lost half their side for 42 before the halfway mark. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was hammered for 47 off his four overs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in DC’s first game this season, bowled tight lines this time around and conceded only 14 runs from his 3 overs on Thursday but wasn’t called upon to bowl the 4th over.

Ricky Ponting Admits Ravichandran Ashwin Not Bowling His Full Quota A Mistake On Delhi Capitals’ Behalf

But the ace off-spinner couldn’t complete his quota of four overs as RR batsmen Chris Morris and David Miller led RR’s resurgence, with DC bowlers struggling towards the death.

Admitting Ravichandran Ashwin not completing his four overs was a mistake on the Rishabh Pant-led DC’s behalf, Ricky Ponting told the press: “Certainly, we will talk about this when we get together as a team. He (Ashwin) had bowled beautifully, bowling 3-0-14-0 and didn’t concede a boundary.”

“He didn’t have a good first game, and he really worked hard in the past few days and adjusted to get things right in this game. He bowled beautifully tonight, and it (not bowling his full quota) was a mistake on our behalf, something we will be talking about as a team later on,” said Ricky Ponting.

Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting feels that spinner Ravichandran Ashwin not completing his four overs is a ‘mistake on their behalf’ despite just giving 14 runs in his three overs.

RR pacer MOM Jaydev Unadkat returned with figures of 3/15 in 4 overs which included wickets of openers Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, and Ajinkya Rahane. Rishabh Pant’s 51 helped Delhi reach 147/8.

Rajasthan was reduced to 42/5 but David Miller and Chris Morris led a fightback. The duo of David Miller (62 off 43) and Chris Morris (36* off 18) had enabled Rajasthan to revive the chase and clinch the game by three wickets with two balls remaining.

Ravichandran Ashwin Is India’s 3rd Highest Wicket Taker In T20s After Piyush Chawla And Amit Mishra

Ravichandran Ashwin had a great 2020-21 season for India in Test cricket. He was vital to India’s wins in Australia and later at home against England. Having lost his place in India’s limited-overs setup, the champion spinner is eyeing a return to India’s T20I side ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup. In February 2021, he made it clear that he’s realistically aiming to return to the T20I side.

With 249 T20 wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin is India’s third-highest wicket-taker in the format after Piyush Chawla and Amit Mishra. His economy rate of 6.94 in T20s is among the best in the world. Even in T20Is, his economy rate is below seven. For Delhi to win their maiden IPL this year, a lot will depend on Ravichandran Ashwin’s showing in the tournament.

Brief Scores:  Rajasthan Royals 150/7 (David Miller 62, Chris Morris 36*; Avesh Khan 3/32) beat Delhi Capitals 147/8 (Rishabh Pant 51, Tom Curran 21; Jaydev Unadkat 3/15) by 3 wickets.

IPL 2021 Brad Hogg Predicts Best Playing XI For Mumbai Indians

Brad Hogg has predicted the best playing XI of defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2021 season. MI, the most successful franchise in IPL history, has won five titles in the last eight years and once again look like the team to beat.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Brad Hogg explained what kind of combination he foresees the five-time champions opting for this season. According to the former Australian player, Mumbai Indians have the strongest squad in the IPL this year.

Brad Hogg (PTI Photo)
Brad Hogg (PTI Photo)

Brad Hogg Picks Quinton De Kock, Rohit Sharma, Suruyakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, And Kieron Pollard Besides Pandya Brothers As Batsmen

The 50-year-old selected MI captain Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock as the two openers. The duo has been magnificent for MI in the past two years and has been instrumental in getting the team off to good starts. Quinton De Kock has proved to be the ideal foil for Rohit Sharma.

The left-hander’s batting prowess allows Rohit Sharma to settle himself at the crease and bat through the innings. Brad Hogg reckons both could don similar roles for Mumbai Indians this season too.

He said in this regard:”They will have Rohit Sharma and De Kock opening the batting. They both complement each other. Rohit Sharma will be a bit more conservative trying to bat the maximum number of overs. De Kock, his role will be to get the momentum, get off to a good start in the powerplay.”

Brad Hogg’s top four is completed by two batsmen who recently made their international debuts for India – Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. While Suryakumar Yadav has amassed 1416 runs for MI and has batted at different positions according to the team’s needs. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan had a breakout IPL 2020 season, where he was the leading run-getter for the Mumbai Indians.

Ishan Kishan. Photo Credit: (Twitter)

After slamming fifties in their respective maiden T20I innings against England, both would be brimming with confidence. Brad Hogg believes Mumbai Indians have the most potent top four in the IPL this year.

“Then you have got Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan coming in at 3 and 4. Both have just got a little bit of international experience and they would be better for that as well,” Brad Hogg said.

The engine room of the Mumbai Indians is surely their lower middle-order consisting of the hard-hitting Kieron Pollard and the Pandya brothers, Hardik and Krunal. The trio has been sensational for MI over the years in providing explosive finishes. The duo ensured that Mumbai Indians become the most destructive batting side at the death. Brad Hogg opines that more of the same could happen this season as well.

“Kieron Pollard at 5, Hardik Pandya at 6, and Krunal Pandya at 7 – the powerhouse of this team. Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya had a strike rate of over 200 in the last five overs. That is where they took the competition away.”

The five-time champions were by far the best side in IPL 2020 and topped the group during the play-offs. They beat a good Delhi Capitals side comfortably in the final to take yet another IPL title. In IPL 2020, the likes of Ishan Kishan (516), Quinton De Kock (503), and Suryakumar Yadav (480) were consistent with the bat to help the side. Jasprit Bumrah claimed 27 wickets at 14.96 to finish as 2nd leading wicket-taker behind Kagiso Rabada.

Brad Hogg’s Picks Nathan Coulter-Nile, Piyush Chawla, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah In Bowling Combination For Mumbai Indians In IPL 2021

While Mumbai Indians have probably the strongest batting lineup among the IPL franchises, their bowling also rose to the fore last season. Brad Hogg believes the new-ball combination of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult could yet again be crucial for them as they pick wickets regularly in the powerplay.

The 50-year-old feels Nathan Coulter-Nile could do the job of the third seamer but Brad Hogg raised a few eyebrows by selecting Piyush Chawla instead of Rahul Chahar.

Piyush Chawla
Piyush Chawla

Although Rahul Chahar has been brilliant for MI, Brad Hogg believes Piyush Chawla would add experience and is more likely to pick wickets in a cluster. He feels the leg-spinner would add another dimension to an already threatening MI bowling attack. Brad Hogg wants Mumbai Indians’ newest acquisition Piyush Chawla to start ahead of Rahul Chahar.

“Nathan Coulter-Nile will come in at 8. He can be handy with the bat as well. I think Piyush Chawla will be in the starting XI. He is the third leading wicket-taker in the competition and will add wicket-taking depth, with Boult and Bumrah at the other end,” Brad Hogg opined.

Mumbai Indians will open their IPL 2021 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 9th in Chennai.

Mumbai Indians’ Leg Spinner Piyush Chawla Felt Nice And Beautiful To Come Out Of Quarantine

Senior leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has completed his mandatory quarantine ahead of the IPL 2021 and on Thursday (March 25) began the net practice along with other Mumbai Indians players. The 5-time champions roped in the leg-spinner for Rs. 2.4 crore in the auction. Piyush Chawla has earlier represented Punjab Kings(formerly Kings XI Punjab), Kolkata Knight Riders, and Chennai Super Kings.

Speaking to the Mumbai Indians after the team’s first practice session, Piyush Chawla said: “It’s always nice once you come out of quarantine. It’s always the best feeling when you come to the ground and get to roll you arm over, and face some balls. So it was beautiful! As a player, when you come out of quarantine, it isn’t easy to get into the nets straightaway. You need long sessions to find you rhytm as a bowler.”

Piyush Chawla had previously plied his trade for the Punjab Kings, the Kolkata Knight Riders, and the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. After an uneventful IPL 2020 season with CSK, Piyush Chawla has now joined the Mumbai Indians squad.

Describing his first day with the Mumbai-based franchise, Piyush added: “Day 1 was very nice, the way things went along. Quite satisfying!”

Piyush Chawla had picked 6 scalps in 7 IPL games averaging 31.83 in IPL 2020. He is the third-highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL with 156 scalps in 164 games averaging 27.32.

Saurabh Tiwary Doesn’t Feel Like First Day

Saurabh Tiwary, who was a member of the IPL-winning Mumbai Indians team in the UAE last year, couldn’t believe that four months had passed since the night MI became five-time champions.

Giving his views on MI’s net session in Ghansoli, Tiwary said: “It feels like we just got back from Abu Dhabi and here we are at the next camp. Many of the players are not there. Everyone who’s here looks in shape. It doesn’t feel like this is the first day.”

A strongly built cricketer, Saurabh Tiwary is known for his hard-hitting skills. This Ranchi batsman became a familiar face as part of India’s U-19 World Cup-winning team in 2008. But what got him in the limelight was the third edition of IPL where he piled up 419 runs in 16 games for the Mumbai Indians.

Saurabh Tiwary performed well for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020. After having represented MI, RCB, and Delhi Daredevils previously, Saurabh Tiwary played for RPS in 2016 and has been representing MI since 2017.

Parthiv Patel Stresses That Mumbai Indians Have All Bases Covered In IPL 2021

Parthiv Patel believes that not playing at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai won’t impact the IPL defending champions Mumbai Indians as they have all the bases covered.IPL 2021 will be staged across six venues, with none of the franchises playing on their home turf. The Mumbai Indians have their league stage matches scheduled in Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.

Parthiv Patel Did A Lot Of Scouting For Mumbai Indians And Stressed Piyush Chawla Brought Experience As A Wrist Spinner

During a discussion on Star Sports, Parthiv Patel pointed out that the Mumbai Indians have assembled a squad good enough to perform in all conditions.

“I have done a lot of scouting for MI. I know what kind of work we have put in, what kind of process the Mumbai Indians have put in. It will not matter as much where Mumbai Indians are playing,” said Parthiv Patel.

“If there was any one thing which anyone would have talked about last year’s Mumbai Indians squad is the need of another experienced spinner, ideally a wrist-spinner, we have got that. This year we went in with the thought that it is just a one year tournament with the big auction coming up, we needed the most experienced wrist-spinner in the side and we got it. So, I think we have covered all the bases as far as the Mumbai Indians is concerned,” added Parthiv Patel.

The addition of Piyush Chawla, the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, will lend some much-needed experience to the Mumbai Indians’ spin attack. One of the most successful bowlers in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Piyush Chawla is number three in the list of highest wicket-takers in IPL having snaffled 156 victims from 160 matches to be placed just behind Lasith Malinga and Amit Mishra.

Ahead of IPL 2020, he was released by KKR, and then he went into the IPL Player Auction. After a bidding war with Kings XI Punjab, Piyush Chawla was secured by CSK but picked only 6 scalps in 7 matches.

Parthiv Patel: Marco Jansen Bowls Well

Parthiv Patel also explained that the Mumbai Indians scouting team had done their homework before roping in uncapped South African all-rounder Marco Jansen. He was snapped up by MI at his base price of INR 20 lakh at the IPL 2021 Auction.

“Everyone is playing good cricket. There have been some surprises about Marco Jansen where not many people knew about it but we have seen in the videos how well he can bowl. He is tall, lanky, 20-year-old and can hit long. We released Coulter-Nile and got another two fast bowlers. So all in all, the Mumbai Indians are sitting pretty. Now it is up to how we prepare and how the process happens and just get that habit going,” concluded Patel.

The Mumbai Indians will be hoping to win a record-extending sixth IPL title this year. It would also make them the first team to win a hat-trick of titles in the prestigious league if they manage to emerge victorious yet again.

Marco Jansen was given an opportunity to bowl at the Indian players in the nets during their South African tour in 2017-18. After Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri saw them, they invited him and his twin brother Duan Jansen, to come and bowl at another practice session.

Marco Jansen made his first-class debut for North West Province in the CSA 3-day Provincial Cup 2018-19. He has played 12 matches and picked up 52 wickets at an average of 20.51 and a brilliant strike-rate of 37.8. In List A cricket, he has played 13 matches, picking up 16 wickets. He was called up for the South African team which toured Pakistan recently. He didn’t get a Test cap but got some priceless experience with the national team for the first time.

Ahead of IPL 2021 auction, Mumbai Indians had released seven players out of their squad in the likes of Lasith Malinga, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Pattinson, Sherfane Rutherford, and Mitchell McCleneghan.

Australia pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile turned out to be Mumbai Indians’ biggest buy at INR 5 crores. Mumbai Indians also inducted New Zealand pacer, Adam Milne, into their team. The right-arm pacer was bought for INR 3.2 crores. Mumbai Indians also spent INR 20 lakh to buy Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun Tendulkar in their team and bought allrounder James Neesham for INR 50 lakh.
