Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Faf du Plessis and Punjab Kings (PBKS) stand-in captain Sam Curran felt the wrath of the IPL governing council after their respective IPL 2024 matches on Sunday.
RCB suffered a one-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It was a nail-biting contest as RCB almost overhauled a tough target of 223 runs against KKR. Karn Sharma hit Mitchell Starc for three sixes when 21 runs were needed in the last 6 balls.
But Starc brought the KKR team back in the game with the wicket of Sharma and then Lockie Ferguson was run out going for a second run when three were needed to win off the last ball.
Meanwhile, the IPL announced on their website that RCB captain Faf du Plessis was fined INR 12 lakhs for his first offence for slow over-rate during KKR innings.
“Faf du Plessis, Captain, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024. As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Rahul was fined INR 12 Lac,” the IPL statement read.
Sam Curran, Punjab Kings skipper, fined for level 1 offence of IPL conduct code
On the other hand, Punjab Kings played Gujarat Titans in the second match of the doubleheader on Sunday. GT proved to be the victors in the end as they chased down the 143-run target despite some brilliant bowling by PBKS bowlers, especially Harshal Patel, who took three wickets.
Sam Curran, who led the PBKS team in the absence of injured Shikhar Dhawan, was fined as much as 50 per cent of his match fees for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct which refers to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.”
Article 2.8 includes “(a) excessive, obvious disappointment with an Umpire’s decision; (b) an obvious delay in resuming play or leaving the wicket; (c) shaking the head; (d) pointing or looking at the inside edge when given out LBW; (e) pointing to the pad or rubbing the shoulder when caught behind; (f) snatching the cap from the Umpire; (g) requesting a referral to the TV Umpire (other than in the context of a legitimate request for a referral as may be permitted in such Match); and (h) arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the Umpire about his/her decision.”
“Curran committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the IPL statement read.
