Jonny Bairstow Shocked And Disappointed After Missing Out Test Squad
Due to poor batting performances in recent Test cricket, Jonny Bairstow has been dropped from the Test squad for the upcoming away Test series against New Zealand. According to the report, Bairstow wasn’t expecting of this exclusion.
At present, the 29-year-old Jonny Bairstow plays Test cricket as a wicketkeeper-batsman. However, in limited-overs international cricket, he generally serves as a specialised batsman.
Bairstow played an important role for the England cricket team to win their first-ever Cricket World Cup trophy in 2019 edition. In the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, he scored 532 runs in 11 innings with an average of 48.36. He played as an opener and finished as the sixth most run-scorer in that tournament. Moreover, he was England’s second most run-scorer in that tournament.
But the right-handed batsman hugely disappointed in the recently concluded Ashes 2019 at home. Serving as a wicketkeeper-batsman, Bairstow scored 214 runs in 10 innings with an average of 23.77. In that series, Bairstow reached the 30-run mark for thrice only, including one half-century.
Before the Ashes 2019, England played only Test against Ireland at Lord’s (London). Once again Bairstow played that game as a wicketkeeper-batsman and scored ducks in both innings.
On last Tuesday (24th September), the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the Test and T20Is squads for the forthcoming New Zealand tour. England will play the five-match T20I series against the hosts New Zealand from 1st November to 10th November. Later, they will play the two-match Test series between 21st November and 3rd December 2019. The Test series will not be a part of 2019–21 ICC World Test Championship.
Jonny Bairstow is a very talented cricketer – Ed Smith
Though Bairstow is in the T20I squad, he has completely missed out the Test squad. Ed Smith, the chairman of selectors, has clarified that they haven’t rested Bairstow from the upcoming Test series. But they are supporting Bairstow and wishing for a strong comeback.
Smith said, “Jonny is a very talented cricketer. We believe he has the potential to be a top, top player in Test cricket for England. He has played a lot, in all forms, and it’s an opportunity for him to reset and work on one or two things. If I had to give a prediction it would be that he comes back stronger and has a very good England career in Test cricket.
“He hasn’t been rested. That would be a cop out. However I do see Jonny as being a top batsman, so I would say it’s an opportunity to reset and come back.”
Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph has reported that Bairstow learnt this Test exclusion after Ed Smith told him via phone. The London-based daily broadsheet newspaper also reported that Bairstow felt shocked and disappointed after knowing this Test exclusion. He was reportedly expecting to remain in the Test squad as a first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman. He earned the Test central contract last week and that made stronger his expectation.
