Mohammad Nabi Believes IPL Experiences Will Help Them In The Upcoming World Cup
Former Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi believes that their ongoing IPL experiences will help the Afghanistan side in the upcoming World Cup.
England and Wales are ready to host the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup from 30th May to 14th July. A total of ten teams will participate in the upcoming World Cup. The rising cricket nation Afghanistan will make their second World Cup appearance in the forthcoming tournament.
Currently, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman are busy in the ongoing IPL 2019. While Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan are playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Mujeeb Ur Rahman is serving for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). The 34-year-old Mohammad Nabi believes that the challenging IPL experiences will help them to contest against the top sides in the upcoming World Cup.
He recently said, “The IPL helps a lot. If you play these kind of pressure games before the World Cup it will help a lot in the tournament against top opposition teams.
“It is a white-ball format after all. Yes it is a change of format but you can adjust easily to the 50-over game.”
Afghanistan will begin their 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup journey on 1st June when they will face the defending champions Australia at Bristol.
Mohammad Nabi believes that the present Afghanistan side has a good spin-bowling combination.
He said, “Ours is a good combination because Rashid and Mujeeb are wicket-taking bowlers and I am more defensive, bowling a lot of dot balls.”
England’s T20 Blast was a great experience
In the last year, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan both featured in England’s T20 Blast. While Mohammad Nabi played for Leicestershire Foxes, Rashid Khan served for Sussex Sharks. The senior Afghan cricketer feels that those experiences will help them to adjust the UK conditions quickly in the upcoming World Cup.
Mohammad Nabi quoted, “It was a great experience for us and was of big help. Rashid and I bowled really well and he also batted well.
“We will quickly get adjusted to the conditions there hopefully.”
Mohammad Nabi also commented about their maiden Test victory
After earning the Test status in 2017, Afghanistan made their Test debut in last year when they faced India at Bengaluru in last June. Though it wasn’t a great experience for them as they lost that match by an innings and 262 runs, recently they claimed their first Test victory when they played their second Test match.
In last March, Afghanistan played a Test match against another new Test team Ireland at Dehradun. The Asian side dominated in that match and secured their first Test victory after beating Ireland by seven wickets.
Talking about that experience, Mohammad Nabi said, “It was a historic occasion.”
We will try our best at the World Cup
Mohammad Nabi is hopeful about present Afghanistan national cricket team. He believes that Afghanistan will play challenging cricket in the upcoming World Cup as well as in the future Test cricket.
He said, “We will try our best at the World Cup and challenge every team that we play against. Inshallah (God-willing) in future we will challenge everybody in Test cricket.”
Before starting their upcoming World Cup journey, Afghanistan will play two ODI series in Scotland and Ireland. In early May, Afghanistan will play a two-match ODI series against the host side Scotland. Later, before their World Cup warm-up matches, the Asian side will play another two-match ODI series against the host Ireland.
