Despite the big batting collapse on Friday (23rd October) evening, MS Dhoni created another history as the right-handed batsman became the first IPL captain to hit 200 sixes.
MS Dhoni created this history during the 41st match of the IPL 2020 where his team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were playing against the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) at Sharjah Cricket Stadium (Sharjah). Before the beginning of this match, Mumbai Indians’ stand-in captain Kieron Pollard decided to field first after winning the toss.
Before this match, the right-handed wicket-keeper batsman Dhoni was only six away to complete his 200 IPL sixes as a captain. Ahead of this match, Dhoni hit 199 sixes in 184 IPL matches as a captain.
In that 41st match of the IPL 2020, CSK captain Dhoni was forced to bat early due to the top-order batting collapse. Dhoni came to bat at the no.5 position but only in the second over when CSK were struggling on 3/3 in 1.5 overs.
MS Dhoni completed 200 IPL sixes as a captain after hitting a sixer to Rahul Chahar
After the end of the powerplay, while the Mumbai Indians leg-spinner Rahul Chahar came into the bowling attack for the first time in the match during the 7th over of that first innings, Dhoni smashed him for a sixer on the third ball of that over. With that over-boundary, Dhoni became the first captain to hit 200 IPL sixes. But on the very next ball, Dhoni was caught behind as he lost his wicket after scoring 16 runs off 16 balls (2 fours and only six).
As a CSK captain, Dhoni has hit 186 IPL sixes (including the latest match against Mumbai Indians) in 171 matches (153 innings). In IPL 2016, Dhoni also led Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), where he hit 14 sixes in 14 matches.
