Ravichandran Ashwin Takes 12 Wickets And Also Scores A Fighting Half-Century In The Fourth Innings Of A County Match
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a ten-wicket haul during the recent English County Championship match. He also scored a fighting half-century in the fourth innings, but his impressive all-round efforts went in vain as his team Nottinghamshire suffered a defeat.
Ravichandran Ashwin played his third game for Nottinghamshire in the ongoing County Championship Division One 2019 against Surrey. In both innings, Ashwin managed to pick up six wickets as he took 12 wickets in that entire match.
In the first innings of the match, Surrey scored 240 runs before losing their all wickets. Off-spinner Ashwin had the bowling figures of 33.2-9-69-6.
In reply, Nottinghamshire only managed to score 116 runs. The right-handed lower middle-order batsman Ashwin was the highest run-scorer in that innings as he scored 27 runs. The 20-year-old Indian-origin off-spinner Amar Virdi took eight wickets in that innings as his bowling figures were 25.5-6-61-8.
During Surrey’s second innings, Ashwin once again took six wickets and ended up with the bowling figures of 31-8-75-6. Before declaring their second innings, Surrey managed to score 224/9. They set the 349 runs target in the fourth innings for Nottinghamshire.
Chasing down that target, Nottinghamshire were bundled out for just 181 runs as they suffered a 167-run defeat. Ashwin once again scored crucial runs in that innings as he remained not out on 66 runs off 79 balls with the help of eight fours and one six. Once again the young off-spinner Amar Virdi shined with the ball in hand as he had the bowling figures of 21-5-78-6.
Ravichandran Ashwin has taken 23 wickets in this County season
During Nottinghamshire’s previous game against Somerset, Ashwin claimed a five-wicket haul and took a total of eight wickets in that match (3/93 and 5/59). However, his team lost that match too as Somerset won that match by 132 runs.
Despite joining late in this tournament, Ashwin is the second most wicket-taker for his team in this County Championship season. After playing three matches in this first-class tournament, Ashwin has taken 23 wickets with an average of 19.91. Right-arm pacer Luke Fletcher is leading the most wickets table for Nottinghamshire in this tournament as he has taken 24 wickets in nine matches.
However, Nottinghamshire is struggling in the ongoing County Championship Division One 2019. After playing ten matches of this tournament, they are currently in the last position in the points table with 48 points.
