Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris and former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar recently talked about the rivalries between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) – the two most successful teams in T20 cricket history.

While the CSK have won three IPL trophies (2010, 2011 and 2018) and two now-defunct Champions League T20s (2010 and 2014), MI have won four IPL trophies (2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019) and two Champions League T20s (2011 and 2013).

In the 12 years of IPL history, where the CSK were suspended for the two years (2016-2017), they played IPL finals for the eight out of ten times. Meanwhile, they never finished below the top four positions in any IPL season. Talking about CSK’s consistency, the former CSK cricketer Scott Styris pointed out producing many Indians were the key to their success.

Styris told Star Sports, “It’s about consistency, CSK have never missed the final series, have won the most knockout matches, it’s the expectation and reliance on these IPL teams to produce Indian players and CSK have produced the most uncapped players for India and it’s a real desire that they have to continue to develop players in that regard.”

Styris also feels that the best finisher in the game MS Dhoni (CSK) dominates over the best finisher bowler Lasith Malinga (MI).

Styris added, “It’s about the best finisher in the game against the best finisher bowler. Dhoni vs Malinga and Dhoni owns Malinga.”

Mumbai Indians is emerging as a team that is threatening CSK in the last few years: Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar also admitted the domination of the CSK, but he also pointed out Mumbai Indians’ late success. Manjrekar feels that the MI have sorted out the better team in the late moment, which have helped them to outshine CSK’s success.

Manjrekar claimed, “When we look at winning percentage, which is a good way of looking at teams, a good winning record, CSK is right up there, but of late, there’s been a surge by Mumbai Indians coming through the ranks, winning titles as well.

“Mumbai Indians have won 4, CSK has won 3 but they have played less IPL (they were banned for two seasons). When you look at that, Mumbai Indians is emerging as a team that is threatening CSK in the last few years, they have actually been the better team than CSK, couple of IPL titles to MI.”

Manjrekar also pointed out that the MI had a better record in the finals than the CSK. While the MI have lost only one final (IPL 2010), the CSK have lost four finals from 2012 (they lost five finals in overall).

Manjrekar added, “When MI come to the final, they tend to win it, CSK not as much. When you look at the entire IPL, CSK go first, but of late, may be Mumbai Indians have a slight edge.”

In the last IPL season (2019), the MI and CSK met in the final of the tournament. It was the fight between the joint-most IPL trophy-winning sides at that moment. It was a thrilling final where MI snatched a one-run victory on the last ball and became the first team to win four IPL trophies.
