Shaun Pollock Picks Dale Steyn, Aiden Markram in South Africa’s ICC World Cup 2019 Squad

As we are nearing the cricketing carnival in the United Kingdom (UK), South African veteran bowler Shaun Pollock has named his Proteas squad for the ICC World Cup 2019. He believes the inclusion of speedster Dale Steyn and young Aiden Markram will bolster South Africa in the ODI showpiece.

Besides, the 45-year-old legendary fast bowler Pollock has put his weight behind the experienced cricketers. He expects them to come good in the quadrennial event.

A mixture of youth and experience to benefit the Proteas:

The Port Elizabeth-based prominent Proteas face has left out Reeza Hendricks. The promising batsman had a decent domestic run back in South Africa. As of now, Hendricks is featuring against Sri Lanka as Hashim Amla returned home to attend his ailing father.

However, Pollock has expressed that South Africa has ample chances to lift their first-ever title in English conditions. He added the positive approach will be key. He cited that taking each game as a challenge will help in improving on their numbers.

Also, paceman Anrich Nortje has missed out on the list following a good outing against Sri Lanka.

In addition, Pollock is of the opinion that Faf du Plessis has served as a good leader and he has all in him to lead the coveted squad in the UK.

Pertinently, South Africa had often failed in ICC events at crucial junctures which they would want to get rid of.

During the fourth ODI between hosts Proteas and Islanders, Pollock stressed that it’s going to be a tough competition. But at the same time, boys are aware of the retreats in the past.

Right strategy to boost South Africa at the ICC World Cup 2019:

Pollock has urged the Proteas to bring home their maiden coveted ICC title. He has also rued South Africa’s dramatic loss at the hands of Australia in the semi-final of 1999 World Cup. Even the game ended on a tie, the result went in Australia’s favour after thumping the Proteas at Super Sixes stage.

In that particular contest at Birmingham, Pollock bowled his heart out while picking a five-for while conceding 36 runs in 9.2 overs.

“There are some strong teams around. We thought we had the formula before, but it didn’t work out. There’s no reason why this team can’t come up with the right strategy. They (are potential to) perform at the right time and bring home the silverware,” Pollock said on air for the broadcasting giant SuperSport.

Concurrently, South Africa team is facing the Lions in a five-match One-day International series. The hosts have taken an unassailable lead of 4-0.

The Newlands in Cape Town will host the fifth and final ODI on March 16. Then, the three-match Twenty20 International series will run between March 19 and March 24.

The Proteas will begin their ICC World Cup 2019 campaign in the curtain raiser against England on May 30 in London.

Here’s Shaun Pollock’s ICC World Cup 2019 squad for South Africa:

Faf du Plessis (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Imran Tahir, Aiden Markram, JP Duminy, Hashim Amla, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Chris Morris and Rassie van der Dussen.
