About the bowler: Leg-spinner Jimmy Matthews had played 8 Tests for Australia while he had played total 67 first-class matches. He had taken total 177 wickets in the first-class career including 16 Test wickets. He is the only bowler to claim two hat-tricks in international cricket.

 

The incident of two hat-tricks: During a Test match between Australia and South Africa in May 1912, Australian leg-spinner Jimmy Matthews claimed the hat-trick in both innings.

In the first innings, he had dismissed Rolland Beaumont, Sid Pegler and Tommy Ward in the three successive deliveries. In the second innings, he had dismissed Herbie Taylor, Herbie Taylor and Tommy Ward in the three successive deliveries.

Jimmy had claimed both the hat-tricks on the same day and none of those dismissals had required any assistance of the fielders.

Jimmy’s first innings bowling figures was 3/16 while his second innings bowling figure was 3/38.  Australia won the Test match by an innings and 88 runs.
