During the 2019/20 international cricket season, which ran from September 2019 to March 2020, many significant records were broken by the individual players or a team.

At the very beginning of the season, Sri Lankan T20I captain Lasith Malinga took his name into some reputed record books, but the top one was the best bowling figures in a T20I innings by a captain. It was the match against New Zealand at Pallekele on 6th September 2019, where Malinga had the bowling figures of 4-1-6-5. Breaking the previous record of 4-0-17-5 by the Jersey captain Charles Perchard against Guernsey (at Castel on 1st June 2019), Malinga created that new record.
Chasing down the 126 runs target, New Zealand were bundled out for just 88 runs (16 overs) in that historic Pallekele T20I. In that second innings, Malinga took four wickets in four consecutive balls. Also, in that same game, Malinga became the first bowler to claim 100 T20I wickets.
