West Indies Appoints New Assistant Coach For Limited-Overs Cricket 1

On the final day of the year 2019, West Indies have appointed the assistant coach for the limited-overs formats. Trevor Penney will play this role for the next two years.

The 51-year-old former English domestic cricketer Trevor Penney is famous for the fielding coaching. Since his retirement from cricket in 2005, Penney has continuously played coaching roles for various cricket teams. Starting as the assistant coach of Sri Lanka national cricket team, later he also became the head coach of that Asian side.

Trevor Penney was also the fielding coach of the India national cricket team. Then, he was also a consultant coach for the associated member Netherlands.

In further, Trevor Penney has also experience coaching in Indian Premier League (IPL) and Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He was one of the coaching staff of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Deccan Chargers (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), St Lucia Zouks, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Barbados Tridents. Under his coaching tenure, Barbados Tridents recently won their second CPL trophy in 2019 season.

Now, West Indies have appointed Trevor Penney as the white-ball assistant coach of the men’s cricket team. He will start his new journey under the head coach Phil Simmons. Penney has signed a two-year contract with the two-time World Cup and World T20 champions.

Penney said, “I’m thrilled and excited to be given this opportunity to work with this brilliant bunch of cricketers and staff led by Kieron Pollard and Phil Simmons. I’ve been lucky enough over the last few years to work with several members of the squad and the Caribbean is like ‘home away from home’ for me being involved in the CPL.”

Under this contract, Trevor Penney will face two ICC Men’s T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2021 editions. The former Warwickshire cricketer is hopeful of winning both these tournaments.

He added, “We have two big T20 World Cups coming up [in Australia 2020 and India 2021], and it’s my aim to try and improve everybody and be as good as we can and, hopefully, win those two major ICC events for the great people of the West Indies.”

West Indies will begin their new year (2020) journey with the home limited-overs series against Ireland. West Indies and Ireland will play the three-match ODI and three-match T20I series from 7th to 19th January 2020. These contests will be the first challenge for Trevor Penney.

The inaugural edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League (2020-22) will also start this year (2020), which is also the qualification process for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
