The long-running transfer saga for Maguire finally ends, with both the Premier League clubs agreeing for a deal
Harry Maguire becomes the most expensive defender ever after Leicester City accepted an £85million bid from Manchester United. United broke the previous record set by Liverpool at £75 million for Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton.
The 26-year-old centre back is set to have a medical today at his new club. He will reportedly sign a 5-year contract. Harry Maguire was brought to the King Power stadium in 2017. He was signed in a deal worth £17 million from Hull City. The English defender’s impressive spell in the Premier League earned him his first cap in the England National team. He played a crucial role in England’s semifinal run in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Maguire has been a target for Manchester United for over a year now. United also tried to bring him to the Old Trafford last summer, but their move failed over Leicester’s demands. Harry Maguire has been a boyhood United fan, which he had expressed previous month when the rumours of his move surrounded. Manchester City were also interested in signing the centre back but had backed out after hearing Leicester’s demands for him.
Leicester had left Maguire at home during their friendly against Atalanta. He had already made it clear to the club authorities and manager Brendan Rodgers of his wish to join United. He made a total of 76 appearances in his two years at Leicester City. Maguire becomes United’s 3rd signing of the summer, with Aaron Wan Bissaka and Daniel James already with the team in the pre-season.
The transfer window still looks busy for United, who are reportedly planning a swap between Romelu Lukaku and Paulo Dybala with Juventus.
