England international and Liverpool vice-captain Jordan Henderson hits out at Steven Gerrard critics and insists he is still one of the best players in the league.
Henderson has been in brilliant form for Liverpool in the last two seasons, just after he rejected a move to Fulham in a swap deal for Clint Dempsey. He stayed at Anfield and fighted for his place. Henderson is now one of the key players at Anfield and also a fan favourite. Henderson has come out to defend his captain saying any criticism of Gerrard is unwanted and not justified. Gerrard scored the only goal for Liverpool against Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Liverpool have started the season poorly and Gerrard has not been in his best, but the new Liverpool vice-captain has defended his captain.
Jordan Henderson: “Stevie’s still one of the best players in the Premier League. There’s no doubting his quality. A lot of teams have been putting someone to man-mark him, which shows just how good he is. I don’t think he deserves any criticism. He’s been the best player this league’s probably seen in a long time and still is.”
Liverpool dominated the game against Everton, but a late Phil Jagielka wonder goal played a spoiler for the Anfield outfit. Liverpool have just won two games out of their first six games this season.
Henderson said: “It’s disappointing. The performance was very good, back to the level we expect.
“The intensity was good all over the pitch, we worked hard, we were more fluent going forward and we made chances as well. And also we defended really well throughout the game so that was pleasing.
“We did quite a lot of work during the week on defending and I think we showed just how well we can defend, so that needs to be the case from now on.
“Then with the goal, there’s not much you can do about that, it’s a great strike.”
