Lionel Messi Faces One-Match Ban And $1,500 Fine For His Controversies Against Chile In 2019 Copa America
Argentina captain Lionel Messi has faced a one-match ban along with $1,500 fine for his controversial segments during the third-place game of the 2019 Copa America against Chile.
Brazil hosted the 2019 Copa America from 14th June to 7th July. A total of 12 teams participated in this competition. Apart from all ten CONMEBOL sides, AFC teams Qatar and Japan joined in this tournament through the invitations.
On 6th July, Argentina and Chile met in the third-place game of this tournament after both sides suffered defeats in their respective semi-finals. In the first semi-final, the previous two-time runners-up Argentina lost against the hosts Brazil by 2-0. Meanwhile, the previous two-time champions Chile suffered a 0-3 margin defeat against Peru in the second semi-final.
Lionel Messi involved in a hot clash against Chile
During the first half of the third-place game, Lionel Messi and the Chilean defensive-midfielder Gary Medel involved in a clash. The moment became hotter soon as they engaged in a head butt.
Soon, the referee came to cool off that clash and showed the direct red cards to both the players.
However, the replay showed that the Barcelona star Messi didn’t even try to conduct a head butt. Instead, he was trying to moving away from that situation, while the Chilean captain Medel was actually aggressive.
The other Argentine players requested the referee to check the VAR, but the referee was confident enough on himself to take the big decision.
In his professional career, it was only Messi’s second red card. His first red card was during his debutant international game on 17th August 2005 (against Hungary).
Meanwhile, Argentina finally won by the 2-1 margin against Chile in the third-place game of 2019 Copa America. While Sergio Aguero (12′) and Paulo Dybala (22′) scored for the winning side, Arturo Vidal (59′) opened the account of Chile through a penalty.
After that match, upset Messi accused the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) for the corruption. Messi also denied attending the medal ceremony.
CONMEBOL announced the sanctions on the Argentine captain
The CONMEBOL has finally revealed the punishment on the Argentina captain. Messi has faced only $1,500 fine for his “corruption” comments. Further, he has received a one-match ban for getting a red card in the third-place game.
Due to that ban, Messi is likely to miss Argentina’s opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification.
Messi scored one goal in the 2019 Copa America.
On the other hand, the hosts Brazil won the 2019 Copa America crown after beating Peru by 3-1.
