WWE Smackdown Preview (16/07/19): Town Hall Meeting, Daniel Bryan Announcement

Extreme Rules was quite an unpredictable night in terms of championship changes. Just like Monday Night Raw, even Smackdown Live has crowned two new champions on their brand. Shinsuke Nakamura has become the new Intercontinental Champion defeating Finn Balor. Plus, Daniel Bryan and Rowan lost the tag titles to the New Day.

Moving forward, we expect major fallouts on tonight’s episode of Smackdown on these two scenarios as the storylines will move toward Summerslam. On the other side, both the WWE Champion and the women’s champion successfully retained their belts at Extreme Rules. So they are likely to get new challengers on this show that emanates from the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The headliner of tonight’s Smackdown is going to be the rivalry between Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon. The latter one is going to host a Town Hall meeting on the show that must end in a chaotic way, courtesy of interference from Owens. This would move forward the ongoing feud culminating a match at Summerslam. Perhaps, WWE will add an interesting stipulation to it.

As per the official website of the company, there will be two more tag matches in-store on Smackdown Live from Massachusetts. The women’s tag team championships will be on the line after a long time. The Kabuki Warriors will challenge The IIconics as they already had a pinfall win over the champions at Japan house show. Plus, Ember Moon will have to find a new partner for her as she takes on the team of Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville.

Extreme Rules kick-off show witnessed an impromptu matchup for the Intercontinental Championship. Shinsuke Nakamura pinned Finn Balor on last week’s Smackdown to get the title shot. Surprisingly, he was able to do it once again, this time for the Intercontinental Championship, (courtesy WWE.com)

“the Irishman ascended the top rope to attempt a Coup de Grâce the second he connected with his running dropkick, but Nakamura had more than enough left in the tank to dodge the maneuver. A pair of Kinshasas — one to the back of Bálor’s head and one straight to the face as he staggered to his feet — sealed the victorious effort, the return to form, and a new championship reign. Shinsuke Nakamura may have never left, per se, but it’s safe to say he’s back.”

The King of Strong Styles is certainly back out of nowhere winning the mid-card title. As Summerslam storylines kick off tonight, we anticipate seeing him engaged in an impactful storyline over the championship. Perhaps, a new opponent could be waiting for him on the biggest event of the summer. We’ll get to know about the new opponent on tonight’s Smackdown.

Unlike the Intercontinental Champion, our reigning WWE Champion was able to defend his title successfully. Some of the fans may have thought to be soft. But when it comes to successful defenses, the prime champion on Smackdown is on top of them all in all of the WWE rosters, (via WWE.com)

“Question his willingness to battle everyone who wants a piece of him; it’s certainly taken its toll. Question his luck if you must; he’s certainly had a little bit of it along the way. But if you continue to question Kofi Kingston as WWE Champion, you simply haven’t been paying attention. It’s a lesson Samoa Joe learned the hard way tonight. He isn’t the first. And the way things are going, he likely won’t be the last.”

So it is a clear indication that the fighting champion will be well on his way to Summerslam after Extreme Rules. A new challenger should be waiting for him as Samoa Joe does not deserve a rematch after digesting a clean pinfall loss. However, if the WWE creative team can not find an alternative opponent, then the Destroyer might continue to hunt him down.

Bayley proved to be a strong Smackdown women’s champion ever since winning the gold at Money in the Bank. Ever since the win, Alexa Bliss is on the hunt for the belt with Nikki Cross. At Extreme Rules, Bayley retained despite a two-on-one handicap match that must have upped her skills. So a tougher new challenge should be in-store for her as Summerslam closes in. We would get to know the opponent’s name on tonight.

Daniel Bryan looked irate after losing the Smackdown tag team championships at Extreme Rules to The New Day. He even hinted to come back as a solo opponent following this devastating loss. It seems predictable since Summerslam is approaching and a marquee player like Bryan should compete in a different capacity. This is what WWE has been promoting as a special announcement from Daniel Bryan ahead of tonight’s Smackdown.
