The Brisbane Heat are an Australian men’s professional twenty20 cricket team that competes in the Big Bash League (BBL). They represent the city of Brisbane in the league. The Heat plays their home games at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.
Brisbane Heat made a disastrous start to the season. They failed to win in the first four games. However, they had an outside chance of making it to the finals. And it was enough for the Heat to bounce back and revive their season by winning their last three games. But unfortunately they were eliminated in the last match. The Heat managed to win three games in eight and ended fifth in the table.
What further hurt Heat’s chances were the absence of some key players. Brendon McCullum missed some matches as he was playing HRV Cup in New Zealand simultaneously while Daniel Vettori missed few games because of injury. On the other hand, captain James Hopes missed the whole tournament because of injury.
Brisbane Heat won their first and only BBL title till date by defeating Perth Scorchers in the 2012/13 final. The match was played at the WACA Ground on 19 January 2013. They had made it to the semifinal after finishing fourth in the table with 4 wins from 8 games. In the semifinal, they beat Melbourne Renegades by 15 runs.
Before the final, they lost captain James Hopes to an injury. Vice-captain Chris Hartley won the toss, and elected to bat first. Joe Burns top scored for Brisbane with 43 runs off 27 balls, in a total of 167 for the loss of five wickets. Jason Behrendorff took 2 wickets for the Scorchers.
In reply, Perth Scorchers scored 133 for the loss of nine wickets from their 20 overs, losing by 34 runs. Adam Voges was the highest scorer with 49 runs from 32 deliveries. Barbadian Kemar Roach took 3 wickets for 18 runs.
After the fifth place finish in the inaugural season, the Heat started the new season on a strong note, winning their first game against the Perth Scorchers.
But the season did not live up to the expectations as Heat lost several close games. And just like the previous season, they ended up at the fifth place. They, however, had something to cheer out as Cameron Gannon led all BBL wicket-takers, snaring 18 wickets at an average of less than 12 – with best bowling of 4–10.
The fourth season was a disastrous one for the Heat. They finished last in the league after winning just two of the eight games. The poor campaign led to the resignation of Stuart Law as coach, and James Hopes as captain. Brisbane Heat were the first team to win the wooden spoon, besides the Sydney Thunder, who won the spoon in the first 3 seasons of the BBL.
The season started in the worst possible manner for the Heat. They found themselves well out of contention for a semifinal spot after losing the first four games. They managed to win three of the remaining four games but it was not enough to secure them a finals spot. They eventually ended the season at the sixth spot with three wins from eight games.
After a disappointing outing in the previous season where they finished sixth, the Heat started the season with a bang, beating Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes. They went on to finish the season at the second place with 5 wins from eight games. But their season came to a disappointing end as they lost the Super Over after their semifinal clash against Sydney Sixers ended in a tie.
The seventh season of the competition saw the teams playing ten games instead of eight like the previous seasons. The Heat made a fine start to the season, winning three of their opening five games. However, they managed just a solitary win from the last five games and ended the competition at the seventh position in the eight-team competition.
