Barcelona Signing Paul Pogba Would ‘Make Us Happy’ – Gerard Pique

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has found it tough to get going once again this season. The player is failing to thrive under Jose Mourinho and this is impacting the club results.

Although he was one of the chief contributors for France at the World Cup, Manchester United are unable to get the best out of him. And this could leave the club with an option to sell him before the end of the transfer window. And FC Barcelona’s Gerard Pique has backed his club to sign Paul Pogba.

“I’m not too well-informed on what’s going on between [Pogba and Mourinho],” Pique said at an event on Monday. “He is a great player, that’s clear, and we will see in the future if he changes clubs.

“It would be good if he came [to Barcelona] and it would make us happy in the future, but we have to respect the fact he is a Manchester United player.”

The 25-year old was signed for a record €105 million back in 2016 by Manchester United. The fee is still a record in Premier League and was then the world record transfer fee for any player. However, Paul Pogba had failed to live up to the expectations of the fans under Jose Mourinho.

The duo found it tough to work together especially over the course of his second season. Jose Mourinho often benched him in favor of youngster Scott McTominay during the latter stages of last season. The relationship only seems to sour in recent weeks.

Barcelona – Long Time Admirers of Paul Pogba

The Spanish giants first tried to sign Paul Pogba back in 2015. However their massive €80 million bid was rejected by Juventus. The Red Devils secured his signing the following season.

With Barcelona trying to fill the void left by Andres Iniesta, Paul Pogba would be a great addition to the current midfield. Although they signed Arthur Melo and Arturo Vidal this summer, Pogba would be the impact signing for the club.

With Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic on the wrong side of 30s, this could be Barcelona’s moment to seal a deal for Pogba. This would pair him perfectly with Phillipe Coutinho at Nou Camp for many years ahead.

Spain’s Gerard Pique Announces International Retirement Aged 31

Spain defender Gerard Pique has announced his international retirement with immediate effect. With 102 appearances for his country, Pique thinks its finally time to hang up boots and concentrate only on his club football at FC Barcelona.

Pique retires from international football at the age of 31.

The 31-year old defender had won the 2010 World Cup and 2012 Euro with Spain. However, he had faced many ups and downs in his international career and also went through criticism and controversies right after he talked in favour of Catalonia’s controversial planned referendum on independence.

Despite, getting the former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique as the new manager of Spain, Pique said he would stick to his retirement call. Pique told reporters,

“I have had a really good time, with a European Championship and a World Cup. But that story is at an end. I have told this to Luis Enrique. “It would make sense to leave it after the World Cup. It has been a wonderful time and I have experienced amazing things, but sometimes you have to end cycles and you have to do that in the right fashion.”

The Barcelona defender hinted of taking retirement before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. And now he has finally decided to call it a day.

Along with Pique, midfielder Andres Iniesta also announced retirement just after the FIFA World Cup 2018. The 2010 World Cup champions had a disappointing run in Russia, as they got knocked out by the hosts in tie-breaker in the round of 16. Pique had a match to forget, as he conceded a penalty which helped Russia to crawl back into the game.

In the end, Igor Akinfeev was Russia’s hero after saving two penalties in a shoot-out to sensationally dump Spain out of the World Cup.

Pique In The Spotlight As Spain Look To Clinch World Cup Berth

Madrid, Oct 5 (IANS) Spain chief coach Julen Lopetegui will have to make changes in his side as they prepare for a game which will seal their ticket to the 2018 football World Cup in Russia should they win.

Spain play Albania in Alicante on Friday night and with a three-point lead over Italy, as well as a vastly superior goal difference, victory will be enough for the Spanish, reports Xinhua news agency.

The run into the game has been marked by the controversy over Barcelona defender Gerard Pique’s views over the recent Catalan independence referendum and the insults he received while training in Madrid. Although Pique explained his opinions in an eloquent press conference on Wednesday, he is still likely to be the focus of attention (and probably insults) in Alicante.

Key players Dani Carvajal and Sergio Busquets will be missing for the game; Carvajal has a chest infection, while Busquets is suspended. Asier Illaramendi will probably step in to replace Busquets in central midfield, while young defender Alvaro Odriozola could make his debut on the right.

If Odriozola doesn’t start then the experienced Cesar Azpilicueta will play at right back.

Alvaro Morata and Andres Iniesta will also miss the game through injury and Lopetegui will probably compensate for their absence by starting with Real Madrid’s Marcos Asensio playing as a false number ‘9’ and Pedro Rodriguez in a wide role to add pace.

Pedro has been in good form for Chelsea and Lopetegui is known to have confidence in him.

Spain won 2-0 over Albania earlier in the campaign but needed two second-half goals to break down a dogged rival and it could be they who will have to be patient again on Friday, but the prize of a ticket to Russia should be worth the wait.

Defender Pique Says A Catalan Separatist Can Play For Spain

Madrid, Oct 4 (IANS) FC Barcelona’s defender Gerard Pique on Wednesday maintained that a Catalan separatist could play for Spain’s football team, but regretted that this was not the case for him.

Pique was booed during the national team camp for the upcoming two World Cup qualifiers by fans after he posted via Twitter a photo of him voting in the illegal Catalan independence referendum, reports Efe.

The defender said at a press conference that “I think that a pro-independence supporter could play with Spain because there is no Catalan national team, and a pro-independence support has nothing against Spain”.

Officers from Spain’s National Police and militarized Civil Guard tried to thwart Sunday’s independence vote from going ahead by removing ballot boxes from polling stations, which led to clashes with voters and left more than 800 people injured, according to the Catalan government.

Spain’s Interior Ministry said that 431 members of the security forces were injured.

The 30-year-old Pique said there are different opinions about the Catalan’s right to vote, but “respect comes first and through dialogue come to fruition”.

On the other hand, Pique said his relationship with Spain’s skipper Sergio Ramos in the selection was “phenomenal”.

Pique on Sunday said he was ready to leave the Spanish national team before 2018 if he is not wanted.

The defender said on October 9, 2016 that he would hang up his boots at the international level after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, he said on Wednesday he contemplated all options, including the possibility of playing with the selection even after the World Cup.

He said that the best choice for him is to keep playing with the selection, accepting the challenge of changing the situation.

Spain Coach Asks For Calm Over Defender Pique

Madrid, Oct 3 (IANS) After FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was subjected to terrible abuse from fans watching the first training session of the national team here, Spain’s football team chief coach Julen Lopetegui has said that the situation surrounding the player was “disagreeable”.

The 30-year-old defender had previously defended the right to vote in the Catalan independence referendum on Sunday and had also retweeted videos of police hitting voters in the poll which was declared illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court, reports Xinhua news agency.

Pique was abused by fans, with one of their banners read: “Pique you make me vomit.”

“I saw Pique looking fine and he wouldn’t be with us if he wasn’t. I hope that all of us can pour cold water on this unpleasant situation,” said Lopetegui on Spanish radio on Monday night.

“I haven’t followed his tweets, but I ask for us not to be distracted by what is a disagreeable situation,” added the coach.

Pique had been in tears when discussing Sunday’s events after Barcelona had defeated Las Palmas in front of an empty Camp Nou after the club played their La Liga game behind closed doors as a sign of “disagreement” with events.

He also said he would be prepared to step down from the Spain squad, which he has represented, making 91 appearances since his debut in 2009 and nobody has ever questioned his commitment on the pitch. He was also a member of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning side.

Neymar Staying At Barcelona, Hints Pique

Amid growing speculation over FC Barcelona’s Brazilian striker Neymar’s possible move to Paris Saint Germain (PSG), the Spanish football club’s defender Gerard Pique on Monday posted a photo of himself and Neymar on Twitter with the message “he’s staying”.

Neymar only signed a contract extension until 2021 with Barca in October last year, but the summer has seen constant rumours, which neither the Brazilian nor his entourage has denied, that he would be open to a big money move to France, which would make him both the best paid and most expensive player in the world, reports Xinhua news agency.  Series victory in Sri Lanka in 2015 Helped India Scale To Numero Uno Status: Virat Kohli

Neymar has held talks with Barca President Josep Maria Bartomeu, with many believing he is using the uncertainty in order to push for yet another new contract with Barcelona.

Pique’s message is far from official, but the central defender has at times seemed to be almost an unofficial spokesperson for the club and following his impressive display in Barca’s first pre-season friendly against Juventus, Neymar again showed how important he is to the club.  I Like To Perform When There Are Challenges Ravindra Jadeja
