Shoaib Akhtar Opens Up For Quitting A TV Show Midway After Pakistan Beats New Zealand In 2021 T20I WC Clash

Shoaib Akhtar, the former Pakistan speedster, quit live on air after facing “rude and obnoxious” behaviour during a show. In a post-match show, after Pakistan’s win over New Zealand, Shoaib Akhtar and the show’s host, Dr. Nauman Niaz, were involved in a verbal spat while discussing the impact of Lahore Qalandars’ Player Development Program (PDP) on pacers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf’s performance.

Shoaib Akhtar said he had been treated badly and insulted on air by the host in the post-match show following Pakistan’s five-wicket win over New Zealand in the ongoing T20I World Cup 2021. The Rawalpindi Express was on the show discussing the Babar Azam-led team’s performance in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup along with cricketing greats such as West Indies’ Vivian Richards and England’s David Gower.

Shoaib Akhtar Interrupted And Offered To Leave Show Midway For Being Rude

While the panel was discussing the performance of pace bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, Shoaib Akhtar was interrupted by Nauman Niaz. A visibly upset former Pakistan pacer expressed his displeasure, and the host offered him to leave the show midway if he wanted to.

“You’re being a little rude and I don’t want to say this: but if you’re being over smart, you can go. I am saying this on air,” Niaz told Akhtar and immediately switched to a commercial break.

A sensational bowling performance by Haris Rauf (4/22) helped Pakistan restrict New Zealand to 134/8 a few days after teammate Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul off his first seven deliveries and finished with 3-31 after dismissing India’s top scorer, skipper Virat Kohli for 57 in a total of 151-7 in 20 overs.

Pakistan’s Haris Rauf, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Mohammad Rizwan have improved their T20I rankings after remarkable performances in World Cup matches against India and New Zealand.

Shoaib Akhtar Left The Show Midway As He Resigned From PTV

Shoaib Akhtar and Nauman Niaz remained on air after the break, but the former eventually decided to leave the show after apologizing to the other guests, which included cricket greats like Sir Viv Richards and David Gower.

“A lot of apologies guys, a lot of apologies. I am resigning from PTV. The way I have been treated on national TV, I don’t think I should be sitting here right now. So, I am resigning. Thank you very much,” said Akhtar before leaving the set.

The problem began apparently when Shoaib Akhtar ignored the line of questioning by the host and decided to talk about pacer Haris Rauf and chose to lavish praise on the Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars and its coach, Aaqib Javed, for discovering Haris Rauf and supporting him properly.

Later, Shoaib Akhtar explained the incident on his official Twitter account through a brief video and a couple of tweets. Later, giving his side of the story, Shoaib Akhtar tweeted and posted a video, saying that Nauman Niaz had been “obnoxious” and that he was quitting the show.

Simon Doull: Pakistan Cannot Play Mohammed Hafeez And Shoaib Malik On The Same Team As They Are An 80 Year Old Running Around In 2 Bodies

Simon Doull has asked Pakistan to avoid playing veterans Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez together in the playing XI against India, calling them an “80-year-old running around in two bodies”.

Simon Doull’s remarks came on a chat show. While picking his preferred XI for Pakistan for the entertaining clash, the former New Zealand pacer said he’ll choose Mohammed Hafeez and Haider Ali in the middle order instead. He suggested that Mohammed Hafeez, 41, and Shoaib Malik, 39, playing together will be detrimental to the team.

Simon Doull: Pakistan Cannot Play 2 Forty Year Olds Mohammed Hafeez And Shoaib Malik On The Same Team Against India

Veteran batsman Shoaib Malik was included in Pakistan’s Twenty20 World Cup squad, replacing top-order batsman Sohaib Maqsood, who was ruled out due to a back problem. Shoaib Malik had captained Pakistan in the inaugural event in 2007 and was a member of the side that won the tournament in 2009. After missing the West Indies event in 2010, he featured in the next 3 T20I World cup tournaments- 2012, 2014, and 2016 tournaments.

Shoaib Malik’s last T20I was in September 2020, and his last ODI was in June 2019. He played 35 Tests, 287 ODIs, and 116 T20Is, amassing over 10,000 runs in all three formats combined, averaging above 30 in each. Shoaib Malik became the first Pakistani batsman to score 10,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket in October 2020.

Simon Doull said: “Babar and Mohammad Rizwan at the top; Fakhar Zaman at three; Hafeez and Haider Ali. I don’t think they can play Hafeez and Shoaib Malik together. You don’t need an 80-year-old running around in two people. That can’t happen. I just I don’t think they can play two 40-year-olds on the same team so I will go with Hafeez and Haidar Ali. [Then] Asif Ali, Imad Wasim definitely then Shadab, Hasan Ali, Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi.”

Despite his age, Mohammad Hafeez has kept his Pakistan career on track on the backs of consistent performances in the middle order. Overall, he has played 113 T20Is, scoring 2429 runs at a strike rate of just under 121. Shoaib Malik, meanwhile, hasn’t been a part of the national team for the better part of the last two years. He has played 116 T20Is, scoring 2335 runs at a strike rate of 124.

Both spin-bowling all-rounders weren’t part of the preliminary Pakistani squad for the T20 World Cup 2021, with the selectors going with younger batters. They were only added to the team recently, apparently because of the pair’s performances in the National T20 Cup.

The sluggish pitches in the UAE also played a part in the decision, with the selectors finding value in their experience in PSL. Sohaib Malik did well in PSL 2021 amassing 354 runs in 13 games averaging 35.4 at a strike rate of nearly 150 with 2 fifties. Mohammed Hafeez scored 271 runs averaging 33.87 at a strike rate of 138.26 in PSL 2021.

Simon Doull: Shoaib Malik Was Really Bad In The CPL

Explaining his assessment of the duo, Simon Doull said he watched both of them during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2021 and that Shoaib Malik was “really bad”. Shoaib Malik just managed 67 runs in 11 CPL games averaging a pathetic 7.44 at an extremely poor strike rate of 59.82.

The commentator said the duo struggles to get going early on in their innings, but Mohammed Hafeez gets an edge over Shoaib Malik just because he could still contribute with the ball.

Simon Doull said: “I watched them both in the CPL and, I mean, I have got to say Shoaib Malik was really bad. Really bad. Eyes were gone, [he was] really struggling. I know he had one really good innings in the [National T20 cup] but I just watched him enough in the CPL to think I just couldn’t have the two of them in the same team. They both struggle to get going early on so they have to make that choice. And because Hafeez can bowl a bit still, that’s why I would go with him.”

Shahid Afridi Feels Fakhar Zaman And Sharjeel Khan Should Open In T20s And He Isn’t Happy With Zaman’s Batting Spot

Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistan all-rounder, reckoned that the left-handed duo of Fakhar Zaman and Sharjeel Khan should open the batting for the Men in Green in the shortest format- T20 cricket. But, of late, Pakistan has used their skipper Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as their two openers in the shorter format.

But Shahid Afridi said that Fakhar Zaman and Sharjeel Khan possess the ability to put Pakistan in the driver’s seat in the powerplay itself. Sharjeel Khan has shown ominous form in the recent National T20 Cup, scoring 339 runs for Sindh with one century and a half-century in 9 matches averaging 37.66, but he isn’t in Pakistan’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Sharjeel Khan plundered 338 runs in the 11 innings that he played in the PSL this year, averaging 30.75, and what was impressive was the fact that he scored his runs at a strike rate of close to 150. He has also played 21 T20Is for Pakistan and has amassed 406 runs in the international arena.

Shahid Afridi Feels Fakhar Zaman and Sharjeel Khan Should Be Pakistan’s Openers In T20Is

Fakhar Zaman, on the other hand, was initially a part of the travelling reserve for the event in the UAE. But he made his way into the main 15-member squad, swapping positions with Khushdil Shah, as PCB announced changes after the squad was selected.

“Everyone has their opinion but I think that Fakhar Zaman and Sharjeel Khan should be Pakistan’s openers in T20 cricket. Even if one of them clicks, we will win the game inside the first six overs,” Afridi was quoted as saying on his official YouTube channel.

Shahid Afridi, who last played international cricket in 2018, was of the opinion that Fakhar Zaman, who’s playing for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the National T20 Cup, isn’t equipped to bat in the middle order.

“I’m not happy with Fakhar Zaman’s batting position. I don’t know who has told him to bat at number five or six because he has played as an opener throughout his career. Our team needs an opener like him who can score as many runs as possible in the first six overs,” he stated.

Apart from roping in Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan made two more changes in their squad for the World Cup. They drafted Sarfaraz Ahmed and Haider Ali and left out Mohammad Hasnain and Azam Khan. Sohaib Maqsood was also finally ruled out of the showpiece event due to a sustained lower back injury and was replaced by senior batsman Shoaib Malik. Fakhar Zaman, originally named a travel reserve, has swapped places with Khushdil Shah.

Shahid Afridi: Azam Khan Needs To Work Really Hard On Form And Fitness

Shahid Afridi was clear-cut in saying that Azam Khan needs to work on his form and fitness to become a regular member of the Pakistan national squad.

“No, he [Azam Khan] should not be part of the side right now. He doesn’t have the required form and fitness. He needs to work really hard on them and especially his fitness,” Afridi added.

Azam Khan has featured in only three T20Is in his career and has aggregated only six runs in two innings. Still, his exploits in domestic T20 competitions had helped him seal a berth in the ICC T20I World Cup 2021 squad before he was dropped again for experienced Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Wasim Akram Reasoned Why He Hasn’t Or Doesn’t Want To Coach Pakistan

Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan captain, and fast bowling legend has opened up on why he hasn’t or doesn’t want to coach the national cricket team.

Wasim Akram, who won the 1992 World Cup as a player and captained the team to the final of the 1999 ICC World Cup, has coached in franchise T20 leagues. He was part of the support staff of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders and has also been associated with several Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises over the past years.

Wasim Akram Doesn’t Think He Can Manage Work Away From Pakistan

In a recent interaction, Wasim Akram was asked why he has never coached the national team Pakistan, to which Wasim Akram said that he will not be able to give the time that a full-time coaching job demands.

“When you become the coach, you need to give at least 200 to 250 days a year to the team and that’s a lot of work. I don’t think I can manage so much work away from Pakistan, from my family. And as it is, I spend time with most of the players in the PSL, they all have my number and they keep asking for advice,” Akram said in the interview.

After calling it quits from cricket in 2003, the legendary cricketer had taken up a commentary stint. After that, he was involved in a coaching capacity and was part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a bowling coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Later he was also seen in the role of mentoring in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Wasim Akram Can’t Tolerate Anyone Misbehaving With Him

Wasim Akram also cited misbehaviour by fans as a reason for him to not think about coaching the national team.

“I am not a fool. I keep on hearing and seeing on social media how people misbehave with their coaches and seniors. The coach isn’t the one playing. The players are the one playing. The coach can only help with the planning. So, if the team loses, I don’t think the coach is as responsible or accountable as we hold him as a nation.”

“So, I’m afraid of that as well, because I can’t tolerate anyone misbehaving with me. And we are becoming like that. I love the people, their enthusiasm and passion for the game, but not the misbehavior that is shown on social media. It shows what we are. I have never seen this happen in other countries.” Wasim Akram added.

Misbah-ul-Haq stepped down as head coach of the Pakistan team last month along with Waqar Younis, who too resigned from the position of bowling coach. Former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq are the interim coaches in charge of the team for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

Waqar Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq both had a year still left in their tenures, having taken charge in September 2019. Later, pacer Mohammad Amir came out of retirement following the coaches’ resignment as he had differences with the duo. Newly-elected PCB chairman Ramiz Raja recently announced Vernon Philander and Matthew Hayden’s appointments as coaching consultants for the T20 World Cup.

The leading runs getter for Pakistan in Test cricket Younis Khan parted way with the Pakistan team as the batting coach earlier this year. The former batsman resigned from the top job on June 22 even though he was roped in by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a two-year contract, which would’ve come to a conclusion after the T20 World Cup.

It’s Sensible To Try And Move England’s Pakistan Games To The UAE: Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain on Sunday stated that it would be ‘sensible’ to move matches against Pakistan to UAE rather than completely cancelling the tour. England is scheduled to travel to Rawalpindi in October for two Twenty20 Internationals, in what will be their first visit to Pakistan since 2005.

Michael Vaughan’s statement came after the Blackcaps abandoned their tour of Pakistan following a New Zealand government security alert on Friday.

Michael Vaughan: It’s Sensible To Try And Move England’s Pakistan Games To The UAE Rather Than Cancelling The Tour

New Zealand was slated to play their first match on Pakistan soil since 2003. The side was to play hosts on Friday in the first of three ODIs in Rawalpindi, before moving to Lahore for a five-match T20 series.

Michael Vaughan has suggested a way to salvage England’s upcoming limited-overs tour of Pakistan, which looks in doubt after the New Zealand men’s team abandoned a white-ball tour of the Asian country citing security concerns moments before toss in the 1st ODI between the two teams. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is under pressure not to send its men’s and women’s teams to Pakistan and has asked its security experts for a report.

Michael Vaughan reckoned the series should be moved to the UAE “if it’s deemed unsafe to travel”. Although some international cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches have happened in the country, major Test nations are yet to travel to Pakistan for full-fledged tours. West Indies are scheduled to travel to Pakistan later this year. Australia is also due to tour Pakistan early next year.

“It would seem sensible to me to try and move England’s Pakistan games to the UAE rather than cancel the tour if it’s deemed unsafe to travel .. !! Hopefully the games for the Men’s & Women teams can take place rather than a full cancellation,” tweeted Michael Vaughan.

For years, Pakistan has played most of their home matches in the UAE, which has become a home away from the original home for its players after international teams refused to travel to the country following the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2009. But it is to be seen whether the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will agree to take their games back to UAE after having hosted some international teams at home.

Six years after the 2009 incident, Zimbabwe became the first Full Member to play in the country in 2015 in a limited-overs series. While not an international match, the 2017 Pakistan Super League final was undoubtedly the biggest game played in Pakistan since 2009. In the same year, captained by Faf du Plessis, a World XI side played the home side in a three-match T20I series, which they lost 2-1.

New Zealand Team Arrived In Dubai After Tour Cancellation

Earlier in the day, the New Zealand men’s cricket team arrived in UAE’s city Dubai after leaving Islamabad on a charter flight. The contingent of as many as 34 players and support staff are now settling into their Dubai hotel and undergoing their 24-hour period of self-isolation.

Of this group, 24 will return to their country New Zealand over the next week or so, as flights and MIQ rooms in New Zealand become available. The MIQ arrangements initially booked for all of these squad members at the end of the Pakistan tour will now be cancelled. The balance of the touring party will remain in the UAE and join up with the Black Caps T20 World Cup squad, ahead of that marquee tournament which will commence on October 17.

James Faulkner Left ‘Shattered’ By ‘Disrespectful’ Contract Offer

James Faulkner claims a disrespectful and “embarrassing” low-ball offer led to his messy departure from BBL club Hobart, adding coach Adam Griffith stuck a “knife straight into my back”.

James Faulkner was the toast of Australian cricket in 2015, earning man-of-the-match honours after helping Australia win the ODI World Cup final in front of 93,013 fans at the MCG. The allrounder hasn’t represented Australia since 2017 but, prior to his relationship with Adam Griffith sensationally breaking down, remained a high-profile player in the Big Bash.

James Faulkner Disappointed After Adam Griffith Said Hobart Hurricanes Performed Well Without Him

James Faulkner detailed his side of the story on Friday, admitting he was “shattered” to be snubbed after joining Hobart in 2018 with a view to finishing his career at home. The Tasmanian declared the Hurricanes’ contract saga left him “stranded” and unable to join another BBL team, forcing him to now look at rival T20 leagues.

“It is very disappointing,” Faulkner told SEN.

“They brought an initial offer to my manager … it was pretty embarrassing. Pretty hard to take. Pretty disrespectful for what I’ve given to Tasmanian cricket. I’ve put my heart and soul into it … it cut pretty deep. They actually called me in before I went to the Pakistan Super League to apologise, and it still never got sorted out. They just left me in the background really after promising me they’d sort it.”

The 31-year-old, interviewed by close friend Tim Paine on the Test skipper’s new radio program, was particularly scathing of Adam Griffith.

“I thought (he) was one of my mates as well as the head coach,” Faulkner said.

“(He said) the bowling group and the team have performed really well without me … we need to move on and that he didn’t really care. That’s like sticking a knife straight into my back. That’s not called for.”

Adam Griffith insisted last week the club was “very keen to keep James”.

“Jimmy’s had a lot of injuries and hasn’t spent a lot of time on the park but when he has, he’s been really good,” he told

James Faulkner fumed about Adam Griffith “using” injuries against him.

“People don’t really know the whole story but that cut me deep,” he said.

“Last season I had an eight-week hamstring.I tried to come back in three and a half weeks and put my body on the line, so we had a shot at making finals. Which I was happy to do. But for the coach to use that against me I felt was wrong. Because it ended up costing myself when it came to other tournaments … I had to start rehab again. It’s all OK for them to say they want me but when they offered what they did … it was pretty clear they didn’t.”

Former Hurricanes skipper Tim Paine was “amazed” the BBL club let James Faulkner go.

“I haven’t seen him as upset as he is,” Paine said.

James Faulkner represented Australia in 69 one-day internationals and 24 T20s, with his finest moment-winning player of the match in the 2015 ODI World Cup final as Australia claimed victory at the MCG.

James Faulkner Will Play In PSL

The Tasmanian all-rounder will continue playing in overseas T20 tournaments like the Pakistan Super League. He took 36 wickets in 25 games for the Hurricanes at an economy rate of 8.02 after signing a three-year deal ahead of BBL|18. Since signing for the Hurricanes on a three-year deal in 2018, James Faulkner has taken 36 wickets at 19.05 with an economy rate of 8.02.

A hamstring injury sidelined the left-arm pace all-rounder for most of the 2020/21 competition, where Hobart Hurricanes failed to qualify for the finals series – he featured in just 12 of the Hobart Hurricanes’ 29 games over the past two seasons due to injury.

For Tasmania, the three seasons from 2010-11 to 2012-13 saw James Faulkner play a crucial role, awarded the Ricky Ponting Medal as the state’s finest player three years running as the side claimed two Sheffield Shield titles.

Shahid Afridi May Retire After PSL 2022

Shahid Afridi looks set to finally call time on his playing career, strongly suggesting next year’s season at the Pakistan Super League will be his last.
Shahid Afridi, who is currently with Multan Sultans and spent two seasons at Peshawar Zalmi and one at Karachi Kings, expressed a desire to represent a fourth franchise, Quetta Gladiators, in his final season.

Shahid Afridi Last Played For Pakistan More Than 5 Years Ago But Has Continued To Play In The PSL Since Its Inception

Shahid Afridi last played international cricket for Pakistan more than five years ago in 2016 but has continued to take part in the PSL ever since its inception well into his forties.  In his international career, he scored 11,196 runs with 11 centuries and 51 half-centuries. He also picked up 541 wickets at the highest level with 10 five-wicket hauls.
“Maybe this ends up being my last PSL,” Shahid Afridi told reporters. “I would like to play for Quetta Gladiators this season, provided Multan allows me to leave. If Nadeem Omar and Quetta’s owners want to have me, I would love to represent them.”

He captained Peshawar Zalmi in the first season and was part of the team that won the title the following year. His current franchise, Multan Sultans, are the defending champions, having beaten Peshawar Zalmi in the final in June. Shahid Afridi played a part in the first half of this year’s edition before missing the UAE leg with a back injury.

Shahid Afridi, however, who played four times for Multan Sultans during the Karachi leg of the tournament, wasn’t available for the UAE leg after suffering the injury during training. Shahid Afridi retired from international cricket back in 2016 but continued to play league cricket mostly in Pakistan.

He has won the PSL with Peshawar Zalmi in his second season at the franchise, and also played a minor role for the Multan Sultans when they won the trophy last year.

Shahid Afridi Has Been One Of The Most Successful All-rounders In PSL

In case Shahid Afridi retires next season, he would walk away from the Pakistan Super League as one of its most successful all-rounders. To date, Shahid Afridi has 44 wickets in 50 Pakistan Super League games at an economy rate of 6.97. That places him eighth on the all-time list; no one who has taken more wickets and conceded fewer than seven runs per over.

While he has been relatively less successful with the bat, he has still had an impact. His 465 runs have come at a strike rate of 153.46 – only Kieron Pollard (166.24), Luke Ronchi (166.12), and Asif Ali (164.29) top that for those with at least 30 innings. Babar Azam tops the list of highest run-getters with 2070 runs in 58 PSL matches. Kamran Akmal with 1820 runs is 2nd on the list.

Wahab Riaz. Image-Sky Sports

Shahid Afridi: Taliban Came With A Very Positive Mind

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is someone who always loves the limelight and continues to do the same after his international retirement as well. Shahid Afridi made a shocking statement to the media on Monday (August 30), claiming that the Taliban, who have taken over Afghanistan recently, have come with a ‘positive mind’.

“No doubt Taliban have come. But, they have come with a very positive mind. They’re allowing ladies to work. They are allowing them to participate in politics. They are supporting cricket…And I believe the Taliban like cricket a lot,” Afridi told reporters.

The 46-year-old Shahid Afridi’s statement also come days after a suicide bombing at Kabul airport killed at least 170 people, including 13 US security personnel.  The 46-year-old, who will be playing his last match for Pakistan Super League, added, “Taliban loves cricket.” He further encouraged their involvement and said it would help cricket grow.

Shahid Afridi last played international cricket for Pakistan more than five years ago in 2016 but has continued to take part in the PSL ever since its inception well into his forties. Shahid Afridi played 27 Tests, 398 ODIs, and 99 T20Is between 1996 and 2018. He scored 11196 runs across formats and took 541 wickets as well.

He burst onto the international stage with a 37-ball century in October 1996 which was then the fastest hundred in ODI history, a record that remained intact for over 17 years before New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson broke in 2013, taking one less delivery. AB de Villiers then broke the record in 2015, hitting a century in mere 31 deliveries.

Imran Khan Supported The Taliban On Numerous Occasions

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has supported the Taliban on numerous occasions in the past. In July, before the terror outfit forcefully took over the Afghanistan government, Imran Khan said the Taliban are not some “military outfits but normal civilians”, and asked how the country was supposed to hunt them down when it had three million Afghan refugees at the border.

In an interview, Imran Khan stressed that Pakistan hosts three million Aghan refugees of which the majority are Pashtuns, the same ethnic group as the Taliban fighters.

“Now, there are camps of 500,000 people; there are camps of 100,000 people. And Taliban is not some military outfit, they are normal civilians. And if there are some civilians in these camps, how is Pakistan supposed to hunt these people down? How can you call them sanctuaries?” he argued.

Later in August, Imran Khan, who has publically endorsed the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, said that his country is reaching out to all “Afghan leaders” and urged other countries to “stay engaged”, to economically support people in the war-ravaged country.

After the hostile takeover of Afghanistan, the Taliban has re-imposed repressive laws and retrograde policies on Afghan women that defined its 1996-2001 rule when they enforced their version of Islamic Sharia law.

Wahab Riaz: Pakistan Has The Ability To Beat India In 2021 T20I World Cup If It Plays To Its Potential

India and Pakistan haven’t been playing any bilateral series for a long time now (since 2012-13) with the political issues going on but they have been meeting in the ICC tournaments or the Asia cup.

The T20I World Cup 2021 group stages will also feature India and Pakistan taking on each other on October 24 and the excitement has already started. Pakistan has never beaten India in any World Cup T20 or ODI game and they will be looking to break the streak in the upcoming fixture in the group stages.

“They definitely have the ability to achieve that result. If Pakistan plays to its potential, then they can beat any team in the world including India.

“Twenty20 cricket is such a format that the whole match can turn in the space of a few balls or even one incident and the Pakistan versus India match will be no different. If Pakistan play at their best, they can certainly beat India,” Wahab Riaz said.

“Given the conditions and where it’s being held, I believe Pakistan has a very good chance of winning the tournament. Pakistan has played a lot of cricket in UAE, and this gives them a very good chance to win the competition.

“They’ll be familiar with the conditions, and they’ll know what the ball will do. If they can utilize the conditions and use them to their advantage, then there is no reason why they can’t be considered amongst the leading contenders for the title,” he added.

Pakistan has been in an excellent run of form in 2021 as they started off with two consecutive home and away series wins against South Africa. They won the next T20I series against Zimbabwe as well but couldn’t get past the line in England where they lost the series 1-2. Their previous series against West Indies ended in their favour as well with a 1-0 win in the four-match rain-hit series.

After the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka squad during a bilateral series in Pakistan in 2009, Pakistan was banned by ICC from hosting any international games due to security concerns. Their home matches were shifted to UAE later, and the country observed UAE as their home ground for many years in the last decade. Now, the situation has improved in Pakistan and their home matches are being scheduled in their own country.

Wahab Riaz  Feels He Has To Perform As It’s Up To The Selectors To Include Him Or Not For T20I World Cup

The fiery pacer stated that he had nothing to prove while revealing that the final decision of his inclusion in the squad rested with the national selectors.

“If it was up to me, then yes you will. But it’s up to the selectors who they want included in the side and who they think will provide the maximum utility. As a player, all you can do is to perform and that’s what my aim is and that’s what I am doing around the world.”

“Lately, I’ve played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and I have shown what I am capable of, and I don’t think I have to prove it again and again. Regardless of what they feel, I am performing well wherever I am getting a chance to play. So, let’s see what the selectors have in mind and whether they want me to be a part of future squads is totally up to them,” Wahab Riaz concluded.

Wahab Riaz hasn’t been in the Pakistan T20 side for a long time now and he will be looking for a comeback in the T20 World Cup squad.

Wahab Riaz has so far played 27 Tests, 91 ODIs, and 36 T20I games for Pakistan. He has bagged 83 wickets in Tests and 120 in ODIs. In T20Is, he accounts for 34 scalps. Since December 2020, he has not represented the national side but was active in franchise T20 league Pakistan Super League 2021 (PSL).
