Prithvi Shaw Could Face Challenges In Tests Series In England And Needs To Make Adjustments, Salman Butt

Salman Butt, former tainted Pakistan batsman has stated that young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw could face a challenging time in England in the Tests unless he makes adjustments to his game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday confirmed that Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav, who are in Sri Lanka, will be heading to England to join the Indian Test squad as injury replacements. While Prithvi Shaw has played five Tests, Suryakumar Yadav is yet to make his debut in the longer format of the game.

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Could Struggle In England As His Footwork Isn’t Good

During an interaction on his YouTube channel, Salman Butt admitted that Prithvi Shaw may be troubled by the moving ball due to his lack of footwork.

“Prithvi Shaw has an opportunity in England to prove why many people rate him so highly. But he could struggle in England given that his footwork is not all that good. In England, even batsmen with the best of footwork sometimes have a tough time, especially when the ball swings.”

Salman Butt added that Prithvi Shaw likes to go hard at the ball but has to be careful in harsh England conditions where there will be movement.

“Prithvi Shaw is someone who likes to go hard at the ball and play brutal strokes. It is evident the way he bats that he enjoys belting the ball. But in England you have to be a bit careful. You cannot just take on the bowlers without taking into account the movement and the conditions. Prithvi Shaw will have to review this aspect of his game.”

The former Pakistan skipper explained that experienced players like skipper Virat Kohli will give Prithvi Shaw the right guidance and he needs to incorporate those suggestions into his game in England.

“World-class players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara are part of the Indian team in England. They should give Prithvi Shaw the right information on how to play in England. Hopefully, he will adjust. If he doesn’t, you will see what happens.”

Prithvi Shaw has made the most of his form, since being dropped following the first Test in the Australia tour, and was in blazing touch versus the Lankans. His 24-ball 43 in the series-opening ODI and a run-a-ball 49 in the third and final ODI were a treat to watch for all. But he was dismissed in the very first ball of the match on his T20I debut off Dushmantha Chameera.

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Has To Score Runs And Hundreds To Justify An Aggressive Batting Mindset And Only Then He Can Be Compared To Legends

“Some fans feel it is wrong to ask Prithvi Shaw to alter his game. They point out to Virender Sehwag and Viv Richards, who succeeded by playing their own brand of cricket. When you start producing results, you can stake a claim to a particular style of play being yours. You have to score big runs and hundreds to justify a different kind of mindset while batting.”

Prithvi Shaw made his T20I debut in the first game of the three-match series against Sri Lanka but was out for a golden duck. In six ODIs for India, the 21-year-old Prithvi Shaw has a strike rate of 113.85 in one-dayers and the best score of 49.

Prithvi Shaw earned a call-up into the white-ball squad following his excellent form in IPL 2021 (308 runs) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (827 runs). The Delhi Capitals’ opener had scored 308 runs from 8 innings, at a staggering strike rate of 166.49 in IPL 2021.

Ajinkya Rahane Shows Signs Of Recovery As He Starts Practicing Before 1st Test Against England

Ajinkya Rahane, Indian Test vice-captain is showing signs of recovery from the hamstring niggle and has started practicing ahead of the first Test against England starting in Nottingham from August 4 as there is finally some good news in store for India’s Test team, currently training in Durham after 3 players were ruled out due to injuries sustained in the WTC Final and practice game.

Ajinkya Rahane himself didn’t play India’s first-class game against Select County XI because of a “mild swelling around his left upper hamstring.” He was administered an injection to reduce the swelling and the pain associated with the injury. It was learned that Ajinkya Rahane has returned to practice on the day and apart from fielding and physical training sessions, he also had a proper net session at the Riverside Ground of Durham County.

Ajinkya Rahane May Play 1st Test Against England

While Suryakumar Yadav is being flown in alongside opener Prithvi Shaw as a middle-order cover but Ajinkya Rahane’s recovery is a good sign as the Indian vice-captain looks like a likely starter in Nottingham. In any case, Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are unlikely to reach Nottingham before the start of the first Test as they will have to undergo hard quarantine before being merged into the bio-bubble.

In any case, if Ajinkya Rahane happens to miss out, KL Rahul will be the first-choice replacement in the middle-order. Mayank Agarwal is set to reclaim his opener’s slot alongside Rohit Sharma while Mohammed Siraj is also in the mix to start against England as Jasprit Bumrah’s recent form isn’t much to cheer about.

Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, And Avesh Khan Were Ruled Out From England Tour After Suffering Injuries

Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Avesh Khan have been ruled out from the ongoing tour after suffering injuries. The Test series is due to start on August 4. While Shubman Gill was ruled out due to shin splints suffered during the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, Avesh Khan dislocated a thumb during the warm-up game against County XI while Washington Sundar aggravated his finger injury.

Suryakumar Yadav’s assertive batting could be used during some point in the series as Ajinkya Rahane’s hamstring injury will keep the team concerned. Ajinkya Rahane missed the three-day warm-up game due to a hamstring niggle.

Ajinkya Rahane is one of the vital members of the team not only in the batting department but also with regard to leadership. He is rock solid and compact in his defence and also a very good player especially away from home, as his record speaks for himself.

The team management didn’t want to risk their star player aggravating the niggle further and, hence he was given an injection to reduce the pain and swelling, which he had during the practice game in Durham. But there is hope and optimism among the Indian team that the vice-captain will play in the first Test.

Suryakumar Yadav Will Score Big Hundreds: Salman Butt

Salman Butt, former tainted Pakistan skipper batsman has predicted that in-form Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav will score big centuries in international cricket. Salman Butt described Suryakumar Yadav as a top-class player, who scores at a quick pace without taking too many risks.

Following a long wait, Suryakumar Yadav has made an excellent start to his international career. He was the Player of the Series in the ODIs against Sri Lanka and scored a half-century in India’s win in the first T20I as well.

Salman Butt: Suryakumar Yadav Will Score Big Hundreds

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Salman Butt stated that Suryakumar Yadav is a special talent, who has the ability to score big hundreds. He stated that the batsman’s shot selection is good and he has excellent wrist work.

“From what I have seen of Suryakumar Yadav, he has excellent wrist work. His shot selection is really good. Even when he plays the big shots, he targets the gaps. Suryakumar Yadav is a very sensible player and reads the spinners very well.

“Of all the Indian batsmen in Sri Lanka, he has played the slow bowlers, including mystery spinners who are difficult to pick, in the best manner. He has a great range of shots and is classy as well. It doesn’t seem like he is trying to hit the ball too hard and there is a lot of fluency in his strokes.”

Salman Butt praised Suryakumar Yadav and said he would love to see him score hundreds.

“The risk factor in his shots is less. The speciality of a top-class player is that he maintains a good strike rate and it doesn’t seem like he is taking too many risks to maintain it. There is a lot of calmness in Suryakumar Yadav’s batting.

“I would love to see him score hundreds. Of course, the T20Is are going on now. But given the kind of batsman he is, I think Suryakumar Yadav will score big hundreds. He is a special talent on display.”

With injuries to key players in the Indian camp in England, the BCCI has decided to send Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav to the UK as replacements for injured batsman Shubman Gill in the Test squad.

Salman Butt: If Suryakumar Yadav Scores Runs In Tests In England It Will Prove That He Is A Top Class Player

Analyzing the move, Salman Butt said that it is a great chance for Suryakumar Yadav to make his mark under challenging conditions.

“Suryakumar Yadav has a huge opportunity to make a mark in England if he gets an opportunity to play. People have started developing a view of him as being a classy player. If he scores in England as well, he will prove that he is a top-class player because England is a tough place to score runs.”

Describing Suryakumar Yadav as a mature cricketer owing to his first-class experience, Salman Butt explained that the maturity he gained by playing several years of domestic cricket is evident in his batting prowess.

“He has debuted at 30. The maturity that he has gained by playing years of domestic cricket is visible in his batting. There are many other talented Indian batsmen who are playing fearless cricket but Suryakumar Yadav is proving to be a lot more mature. Maybe that is because of the amount of domestic cricket he has played. Most batsmen are at their peak at the age at which Suryakumar Yadav has made his debut.”

Asked to open the batting, Suryakumar Yadav excelled in his role for Mumbai Indians and scored over 500 runs in IPL 2018, including four fifties. In 2019, he amassed 424 runs to be MI’s second-highest run-getter. He outperformed himself in the 2020 season scoring 480 runs at a strike rate of 145 and went on to make his T20 International debut later for India. He managed 173 runs in IPL 2021 averaging 24.71 in 7 games before the suspension of the league.

Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan Ruled Out Of 5-Match England Test Series

Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill, and Avesh Khan have been ruled out from the ongoing tour after suffering injuries. The Test series is due to start on August 4. While Shubman Gill was ruled out due to shin splints suffered during the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, Avesh Khan dislocated a thumb during the warm-up game against County XI while Washington Sundar aggravated his finger injury.

Washington Sundar, the all-rounder had taken an injection on his right-hand bowling finger. However, his recovery will take longer than expected and he is not bowling-fit. He is ruled out for the remainder of the tour.

Fast bowler Avesh Khan suffered a blow to his left thumb on Day 1 of the warm-up game between Select County XI and India. He was taken for an X-Ray and the result confirmed a fracture. A specialist was consulted for further management of his injury. He is ruled out of India’s Tour of England.

Opening batsman Shubman Gill sustained a developing stress reaction on his left lower leg (shin) during the World Test Championship final which was won by New Zealand. This was confirmed via an MRI scan. He is ruled out of the tour and has returned back to India.

Rishabh Pant Recovered From Covid-19 While Prithvi Shaw And Suryakumar Yadav Has Been Named As Replacements

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has recovered from COVID-19 with two negative RT-PCR tests. He has begun his preparations for the upcoming Test series after clearance from the BCCI Medical Team. Bowling coach Bharat Arun, Wriddhiman Saha, and Abhimanyu Easwaran have completed their self-isolation in London and have now joined Team India in Durham.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav as replacements.

It is understood that Prithvi Shaw’s form has impressed the team management and Mayank Agarwal’s current rhythm isn’t the greatest. However, with quarantine rules in place, it is not clear if Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw can make it in time for the first Test after completing their hard quarantine.

It could not be confirmed when Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav will link up with the squad in England – a BCCI statement on Monday didn’t provide details either – or if they would be available for the final two matches of the T20I series in Sri Lanka which ends on July 29.
While Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar were part of the 20-member India squad announced in May for the World Test Championship final and the England series, Avesh Khan was part of the four standbys. All three players have sustained injuries serious enough to be ruled out of the five-Test series starting on August 4.

India’s squad: Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Md. Prithvi Shaw And Suryakumar Yadav Are Perhaps Right Choices For Inclusion In 5 Tests Against England: Aakash Chopra

Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are expected to join India’s Test squad in England for the five-match series against the hosts, as per reports. Aakash Chopra reckons that, given the players’ recent form, the Indian team has made the right choice by drafting them into the Test team.

Both Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are currently in Sri Lanka for the limited-overs series against the Islanders. It is not yet clear when the duo will link up with the Test team in England. With the trio of Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, and Washington Sundar being ruled out due to injuries, the Indian team management has urgently sought replacements. Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are the frontrunners to join the Test team.

Prithvi Shaw Is Someone Who Has Scored A Ton On Debut In Tests And Deserves To Be Part Of India’s Squad For 5 Tests Against England: Aakash Chopra

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Aakash Chopra believes Shaw will have a better chance of featuring in India’s Test XI over Abhimanyu Easwaran if the need arises. Abhimanyu Easwaran is already in England as a standby opener.

“This (replacements coming in) doesn’t come as a surprise, the number of injuries that we have seen already in the Indian camp. You do wonder what’s happening there (in Indian camp). Abhimanyu Easwaran is already there. He is part of the squad. But if Prithvi Shaw is going it just feels from outside that he might play before Abhimanyu Easwaran if the opportunity arises”

Prithvi Shaw

Chopra added that Prithvi Shaw’s selection is well justified as he has been with the Indian Test team in recent times.

“Is it a fair selection? Yes it is. Shaw was part of India’s tour to Australia. He is someone who has scored a century on debut in Test match. Shaw deserves to be there.”

Prithvi Shaw became India’s 293rd Test cricketer in Rajkot against West Indies in November 2018 after India’s selectors ran out of patience with Shikhar Dhawan. Prithvi Shaw marked the occasion by becoming the youngest Indian Test centurion on debut, and just the second-youngest Test centurion for India after Sachin Tendulkar.
He has played 5 Tests amassing 339 runs averaging 42.37.

Suryakumar Yadav Is Someone Who Has Played A Lot Of Long Format First Class Cricket: Aakash Chopra

Suryakumar Yadav has become a household name after his exploits in the IPL over the past couple of seasons. The Indian batsman has carried his good form into the national team as well. While many often view him as a limited-overs specialist, Aakash Chopra highlighted how Suryakumar Yadav had done the hard yards for Mumbai in first-class cricket as well.

“The guy is in red hot form and the Indian team is looking to cash in on the same form albeit in a very different format. Suryakumar Yadav has got 5000 first class runs. When you look at it from that vantage point, he is not your T20 specialist.”

“He is someone who has played a lot of long form cricket. He has been playing for the last 10 years for Mumbai. The recent attention has come via lot of white ball runs. But at the core of Suryakumar’s batting, it is the long form batting.”

Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav (BCCI)

Aakash Chopra further explained how India is currently short of options as there has been no first-class cricket for over a year. Resultantly, the selection of Suryakumar Yadav is justified due to his experience in the longest format of the game.

“If you look at the options, no first class cricket in the last 18 monhts. India isn’t brimming with options in the middle order for once with Shreyas Iyer also not available for selection. If you look at it from all those quarters, Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are perhaps the right choices.”

Suryakumar Yadav has played 77 first-class games amassing 5326 runs averaging 44.01 with 14 tons to his name. It remains to be seen whether the duo will make a positive impact if they get a chance to link up with the Indian squad in England.

Prithvi Shaw Scores A Golden Duck On His T20I Debut But Shikhar Dhawan Hopes He Will Bounce Back

Prithvi Shaw registered a golden duck on his debut in the first T20I on Sunday but skipper Shikhar Dhawan feels the opening batsman will bounce back in the next game against Sri Lanka.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked four while Deepak Chahar scalped two wickets as India defeated Sri Lanka by 38 runs in the first T20I.

Prithvi Shaw Is Playing Really Well And He Will Bounce Back: Shikhar Dhawan

The Indian opener Prithvi Shaw has made the most of his form, since being dropped following the first Test in the Australia tour, and was in blazing touch versus the Lankans. His 24-ball 43 in the series-opening ODI and a run-a-ball 49 in the third and final ODI were a treat to watch for all. But he was dismissed in the very first ball of the match on his T20I debut off Dushmantha Chameera.

“Prithvi is playing really well and I am sure he will bounce back in the next game. It’s very hard to pick Varun, even I find it difficult when I am facing him in the nets,” said Dhawan after the win.

Indian bowlers got the job done without any trouble as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. India bundled out Sri Lanka for 126 in the 19th over.

“Sri Lanka were playing well but we knew our spinners will get some turn. Yuzi and KP bowled really well. And even Varun, playing his first match,” said Dhawan.

Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga had picked two wickets to help Sri Lanka restrict India to 164/5 despite Suryakumar Yadav’s fifty. India handed debuts to Prithvi Shaw and Varun Chakravarthy for this match.

The home side came into this match high on confidence after winning 3rd ODI and also gave debuts to two players in Charith Asalanka and Chamika Karunaratne. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and chose to field first keeping in mind the dampness of the pitch and the faint grass covering as well.

After making an impressive debut in the ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this week, Prithvi Shaw recorded an unfortunate golden duck in the T20I series opener in Colombo on Sunday.

Prithvi Shaw was outfoxed by the away swinger from Dushmantha Chameera as the youngster registered the unwanted score in his first appearance in the format. He became the second Indian batsman to register the figure after KL Rahul had recorded the same in his debut appearance against Zimbabwe in Harare back in 2016.

Shikhar Dhawan: India Was 10-15 Runs Short But It Was Still A Good Total

The Indian skipper felt the visitors were 10-15 runs short of the par score. Shikhar Dhawan himself scored 46 and Suryakumar Yadav scored 50 while Sanju Samson was looking good but was dismissed for 27. Hardik Pandya failed once again while Ishan Kishan failed to increase the run rate much.

” I thought we were 10-15 runs short but we felt it was still a good total. We played quite well after losing a wicket on the first ball. Getting to 50 in the powerplay was good,” said Dhawan.

“I think only 5% scope of improvement. Surya is a great player and we enjoy watching him bat. He was taking pressure off me as well,” he added.

India and Sri Lanka will next lock horns in the second T20I on Tuesday. India may try to change the opening combination as they have uncapped openers RCB’s Devdutt Paddikkal and CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad on the bench waiting for their chances.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Test Future To Be Taken By BCCI After T20I World Cup

Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn’t played a Test match since January 2018 owing to injury and fitness issues. Now, according to reports, a call on the experienced pacer’s Test future is likely to be taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the conclusion of the forthcoming T20I World Cup.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s exclusion from the Test squad became a talking point after India’s pacers struggled to make an impression in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand in Southampton.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Won’t Be Pushed To Play Tests Before 2021 T20I World Cup

According to a report, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s name was also discussed as a replacement for injured players in England. But the BCCI concluded it was important to test the pacer’s fitness first before bringing him back for the longer format.

A top BCCI official said: “The board had a discussion with Bhuvneshwar. It has been decided that he won’t be pushed to play Test cricket before the T20 World Cup. He has to first play three-four First-Class games. He hasn’t played the longer format for over three years. There’s a chance of him breaking down if he suddenly resumes playing Test cricket.”

The report added that a call on Bhuvneshwar Kumar playing Tests will be taken before the tour of South Africa in December. Having recovered from yet another injury, Bhuvneshwar Kumar made a comeback to the Indian team during the limited-overs leg of the home series against England.

He was impressive on return and was the man of the match in the deciding T20I with figures of 2 for 15. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also claimed 3 for 42 in the final ODI of the series against England. The 31-year-old is currently in Sri Lanka as the vice-captain of a young limited-overs squad.

He had a memorable time in the second ODI of the three-match series, picking up three wickets and then scoring an unbeaten 19 as India clinched the three-match series. He has grappled with recurring injuries in the last three years. He hasn’t played Test cricket since 2018 and was recently overlooked from the 20-men squad for the upcoming Test summer in England.

In his only Test series in England (in 2014) to date, Bhuvneshwar Kumar had shared the Man of the Series award with England’s James Anderson on the back of picking 19 wickets in five Tests at an average and strike rate of 26.63 and 54.5 respectively. The 31-year-old right-arm pacer has not played multi-day format cricket since January 2018 when he appeared in a Test in South Africa.

BCCI To Send Prithvi Shaw And Suryakumar Yadav To England As Cover For Injured Players

Meanwhile, the BCCI has decided to send two players from the Sri Lanka tour, Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav, to England as cover for injured players for the Test series. After Shubman Gill was ruled out of the Test series due to a shin injury, Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan have also suffered finger injuries.

BCCI And ECB Must Play A White Ball Series Parallel To The 5 Tests: Kamran Akmal

Kamran Akmal, veteran Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman feels the BCCI and ECB must play a white ball series in parallel to India and England 5 matches Test series. Kamran Akmal believes there is enough depth in both Indian and English cricket, which can allow them to expose more players to international cricket.

ECB had to field a completely new England team with Ben Stokes as the captain for the ODI series against Pakistan due to the COVID-19 cases arising in the English camp. However, the England team still managed to whitewash Pakistan 3-0. The BCCI also fielded a new-look Indian team in the absence of Test specialists in England that beat hosts Sri Lanka 2-1 in ODIs.

Kamran Akmal: RECB And BCCI Must Think About Organizing A White Ball Series In Parallel To The Test Series

In a video on his YouTube channel, Kamran Akmal explained how both ECB and BCCI can provide international exposure to the huge pool of players that they have.

“The way this new-look Indian team has performed has been simply outstanding. The ECB and the BCCI must now think about doing a white ball series in parallel to the Test series.

“They have the ability to make two teams each and can play white-ball cricket with some other country. This will give the players confidence and experience at international level,” Kamran Akmal stated.

The main Indian team that is preparing for the Test series in England is ravaged by a number of injuries. After Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a shin injury, Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar will also miss the series due to injuries sustained in the warm-up game against County Select XI.

Kamran Akmal: Things Might Get Difficult For India As Virat Kohli Has A Stiff Back While Ajinkya Rahane Has A Hamstring Issue

But the two biggest injury concerns will be skipper Virat Kohli and deputy Ajinkya Rahane, who missed the warm-up game due to a stiff back and a hamstring issue respectively. Kamran Akmal feels the Indian team will have a hard time in England having to deal with so many injuries.

“There so many injury concerns in the Indian camp that is preparing for the England series. First Shubman Gill was injured, then Sundar got injured. Skipper Kohli had a stiff back and it will be interesting to see whether he sits out of the first Test. Rahane has a hamstring issue to so without these 2-3 players, things might get difficult for India,” Kamran Akmal concluded.

Suryakumar Yadav has received his maiden Test team call-up and he along with opener Prithvi Shaw and off-spinner all-rounder Jayant Yadav will be flying to England as replacements sought by the team management after three players were ruled out due to injury.

England won the 3 ODIs against Pakistan by 9 wickets, 52 runs, and 3 wickets respectively. Pakistan won the 1st T20I by 31 runs but England won the 2nd and 3rd T20I by 45 runs and 3 wickets respectively to win the series 2-1.

The likes of James Vince(158 runs averaging 79), Lewis Gregory(117 runs averaging 58.5 and 4 wickets averaging 24.25) and Saqib Mahmood (9 wickets averaging 13.67) stood out for England in the ODI series in the absence of senior players.

Just By Playing Like Them, One Can’t Become Virender Sehwag Or Viv Richards: Salman Butt On Prithvi Shaw

Salman Butt has said that it is unfair to compare Prithvi Shaw with legends like Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag so early in his career. The former tainted Pakistan skipper added that playing an aggressive brand of cricket is not enough for a player to draw comparisons with the legendary swashbuckling duo.

Prithvi Shaw’s belligerent style of batting has divided opinion. The young opener scored two 40s in the ODI series in Sri Lanka but failed to carry on the momentum. According to experts, Prithvi Shaw must be allowed to play his natural game, while others feel the young opener needs to put a bigger price tag on his wicket.

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Has To Score Big Runs And Tons To Justify A Different Kind Of Batting Mindset

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Salman Butt opined that Prithvi Shaw needs to justify his hard-hitting style of play with big scores.

He said: “Some fans feel it is wrong to ask Prithvi Shaw to alter his game. They point out to Virender Sehwag and Viv Richards, who succeeded by playing their own brand of cricket. When you start producing results, you can stake a claim to a particular style of play being yours. You have to score big runs and hundreds to justify a different kind of mindset while batting.”

Virender Sehwag

Pointing out that players like Richards and Sehwag are of a rare breed, Butt added: “Look at the gap between Richards and Sehwag’s careers. It took nearly 10-15 years after Richards for the cricket world to see a player with a similar attacking mindset in Sehwag.

“Richards scored 180 in England at a time when 225 was considered a good ODI total. Sehwag scored two triple hundreds in Test cricket and averaged over 50 for most of his career. Just by playing like them, one cannot become a Sehwag or a Richards. You have to put up that kind of a performance.”

Salman Butt: Prithvi Shaw Is Playing Too Many Shots Too Early Despite Having All The Strokes In His Repertoire

According to Salman Butt, although Prithvi Shaw has all the strokes in the book, he needs to work on his game to produce better results. The former Pakistan opener gave the example of Prithvi Shaw’s performance in New Zealand when he kept getting out in the ODIs after getting starts.

Butt explained: “To give himself stability, a youngster has to convert starts. Talking of Prithvi Shaw, I saw him playing one-dayers for India in New Zealand as well.

“He used to hit three-four cracking boundaries and then get out. So, when something is not letting you continue and stopping you from making a big score, you need to modify it. You first need to score runs and then shape up in your own style.”

“He has all the strokes in his repertoire, but Prithvi Shaw is playing too many shots too early. He needs to take into consideration factors like time, pace, wicket and opposition and manage his innings accordingly. Even the great Sachin Tendulkar paced his innings as per the situation,” Salman Butt added.

He may leave the Sri Lankan tour midway as reports suggest he will board the flight to England to join the Test specialist team as a replacement.

Suryakumar Yadav Receives Maiden Test Call-up For 5-match Test Series Against England

Suryakumar Yadav has received his maiden Test team call-up and he along with opener Prithvi Shaw and off-spinner all-rounder Jayant Yadav will be flying to England as replacements sought by the team management after three players were ruled out due to injury.

Suryakumar Yadav Receives Maiden Test Call-up

A senior BCCI office-bearer confirmed the development. Suryakumar Yadav has played 77 first-class games amassing 5326 runs averaging 44.01 with 14 tons to his name.

“Yes, Prithvi, Surya, and Jayant will be flying to England. Whether they will fly in the middle of the T20 Internationals (Prithvi and Surya are part of the team in Sri Lanka) or post that is being worked out. But yes, these three are our replacement players for Test series in England.

“They might just leave after the three T20 Internationals but we will get confirmation in another three days,” the senior official told PTI.

Suryakumar Yadav May Play A Role As Ajinkya Rahane Has A Hamstring Injury

As far as Jayant Yadav is concerned, his superior batting abilities got the nod as he has a Test hundred and also will be a steady net bowler unless Ravichandran Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja suffer from any injury in a long series. Suryakumar Yadav’s assertive batting could be used during some point in the series as Ajinkya Rahane’s hamstring injury will keep the team concerned.

“In any case, if Ajinkya misses the first Test, it will be KL Rahul who will bat in the middle order in Nottingham. The team management is still confident that Ajinkya might be alright before the Nottingham Test.”

Jayant Yadav was out of favour with the national selectors and last played for India way back in February 2017. Four months before that, he had made his debut in international cricket during the Vizag ODI against New Zealand.

Jayant Yadav has not played any ODI since 2017. Few days after debuting in ODI, he made his debut in Tests too in India’s home Tests against England– a five-Test series. The Haryana all-rounder impressed straight away by making notable contributions with both bat and ball in hand in the Tests. In his debut Test, he scored 62 runs in addition to picking up 4 wickets.

It was followed by his maiden fifty and four wickets in the following game. In his third Test, Jayant Yadav became the first Indian batsman to score a Test century at No.9. In February, he played one more Test which was against Australia before being dropped.
