Pakistan Should Give Youngsters Longer Run To Prove Themselves, Says Imam-ul-Haq

Imam-ul-Haq has explained that one of the things that are pulling down Pakistan cricket is the unwillingness to give the younger players a long rope.

During the 1990s and 2000s, the contests between India and Pakistan used to be pretty evenly-matches. However, over the last few years, the contests have become a lot more one-sided. While India has developed a strong pool of players, Pakistan has not been able to do that at the same level as their rivals.

Imam-ul-Haq Spoke To Eoin Morgan And Virat Kohli As He Feels Pakistan Is Lacking As Their Cricketers Isn’t Given A Proper Run To Prove Themselves

Opening batsman Imam-Ul-Haq has explained that one of the things bothering Pakistan cricket is the unwillingness to give the young players a long rope, something that cricketing nations like India and England have excelled at.

India’s pool of players is vast and highly talented, whereas England isn’t much behind. Pakistan, on the other hand, have depth in their line-up of their youngsters, but Imam-ul-Haq reckons the management needs to show faith in their abilities and give them considerable opportunities to help them nurture.

“I have spoken to Eoin Morgan and Virat Kohli, two of the most successful captains in white-ball cricket. I have heard from them and their players that the cricketers get a full go and a proper run to prove themselves. I think this is where we are lacking,” Imam told sports presenter Sawera Pasha on the YouTube show ‘Cricast’.

“I think if we find that consistency, we will get better results. In South Africa, we managed to chase 330, because the core of the ODI side has been the same for a while.”

Pakistan batsman Imam-ul-Haq has opined that players being underpaid compared to nations like India is one reason youngsters cannot express themselves freely out in the middle. Like the IPL, Pakistan has its own T20 league (PSL). However, according to Imam-ul-Haq, players don’t get paid enough, be it in the franchise or domestic cricket.
The 25-year-old revealed that he has even spoken to legends like Eoin Morgan and Virat Kohli on why their (white-ball) teams are incredibly successful and how they managed to maintain consistency.

Imam-ul-Haq: IPL Has Made A Big Difference In India

Another reason why Pakistan is behind in terms of producing quality young cricketers such as India points out Imam is not getting the chance to play the IPL. Pakistan cricketers have been banned from playing the IPL, with their only appearance coming in the first-ever edition back in 2008. Imam-ul-Haq says a tournament of the calibre of IPL has gone a long way in shaping youngsters.

“So when they face these bowlers in international cricket, there is less of a mental barrier. For Pakistan, a player is directly drafted in from domestic cricket, so he finds it difficult to make that immediate adjustment,” Imam explained.

Apart from Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir (Rajasthan Royals), other Pakistan cricketers like Shahid Afridi (Deccan Chargers), Shoaib Malik (Delhi Daredevils), Shoaib Akhtar (Kolkata Knight Riders), Misbah-ul-Haq (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Mohammad Asif (Delhi Daredevils), Kamran Akmal (Rajasthan Royals), Salman Butt (Kolkata Knight Riders), Umar Gul (Kolkata Knight Riders), Younis Khan (Rajasthan Royals), Mohammad Hafeez (Kolkata Knight Riders) participated in IPL 2008.

Sohail Tanvir represented Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the inaugural edition of the T20 Championship and scripted history by claiming the Purple Cap. Rajasthan Royals was on a roll during IPL 2008 as they became the first franchise to lift the elite Trophy. Sohail Tanvir played a major role in Rajasthan’s success as he picked 22 wickets in 11 matches including a best of 6 for 14, which stood as an IPL record for many years.

Sohail Tanvir Maintains He Initially Had No Idea What IPL Was

Sohail Tanvir, a former Pakistan seamer was one among a handful of Pakistan players who received a chance to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sohail Tanvir represented Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the inaugural edition of the T20 Championship and scripted history by claiming the Purple Cap.

Sohail Tanvir Was Young And Inexperienced When He Played IPL In Its Inaugural Edition In 2008

The veteran opened up on his stint in the Indian Premier League saying that it was an enriching experience and gave him a platform to play against some of the best players. Sohail Tanvir admitted that initially, he had no idea regarding what the IPL was.

In an interaction on the YouTube channel My Master Cricket Coach, the 36-year-old said, “When I played IPL back in the first edition in 2008, I was young and inexperienced as I had not played too many international games.”

“That time, I think we were playing a series against South Africa and league cricket hardly used to be played, so I had no idea what the IPL was. The cricket board told me that we have got you a contract and you have to go to play IPL in March-April,” he said

“And, when I went to play in the IPL, there were so many big stars. I had never thought about something like that. The best bowlers from all over the world were there. So, to go there and perform so well…” Tanvir added.

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) is a franchise cricket team based in Jaipur, India, which plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). They were one of the eight teams that competed in the 2008 Indian Premier League. They were captained by Shane Warne. The all-rounder Shane Watson won the man of the tournament award for scoring as many as 472 runs and picking 17 wickets.

Rajasthan Royals finished winners in the IPL and qualified for the champions league T20. The team won the inaugural edition of the IPL under the captaincy of Shane Warne, despite being written off as a title contender by the media and fans. The Royals were also the runners-up of the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy.

On 14 July 2015, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were suspended for two years over a 2013 betting scandal, meaning they could not participate in both the 2016 and 2017 IPL tournaments. They returned to the competition for the 2018 season.

Sohail Tanvir: Everyone Knows About The Fan Following Of Pakistan Players In India And If Pakistan Players Are Allowed To Play In IPL, It Will Be Beneficial For Both Players And League

2008 was the last season when the Pakistan players played in the Indian Premier League. Due to the political tension between the two neighbouring nations, India and Pakistan face each other on the cricket field only during the ICC events. However, the veteran seamer is hopeful that relations between India and Pakistan will improve soon and the Pakistani players will be allowed to feature in the tournament as it will benefit both the players and the league.

“If Pakistani players are allowed to play in the IPL, it will be beneficial for both the players and the league. Players from all over the world except Pakistan play in the IPL. Everybody knows about the fan-following of Pakistan players in India. I have witnessed that while playing for Pakistan and also in the IPL.”

“When I played IPL, I learned a lot. Since I did well, it played a major role in me gaining confidence going ahead. So it would be great if our players get to play in the league. But, these things are not in our control. There are many other factors at work. Hope it happens sooner or later,” Sohail Tanvir signed off.

Apart from Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir, other Pakistan cricketers like Shahid Afridi (Deccan Chargers), Shoaib Malik (Delhi Daredevils), Shoaib Akhtar (Kolkata Knight Riders), Misbah-ul-Haq (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Mohammad Asif (Delhi Daredevils), Kamran Akmal (Rajasthan Royals), Salman Butt (Kolkata Knight Riders), Umar Gul (Kolkata Knight Riders), Younis Khan (Rajasthan Royals), Mohammad Hafeez (Kolkata Knight Riders) participated in IPL 2008.

Indian Players Will Benefit If They Play PSL, So As Pakistan Players In The IPL: Mohammad Amir

Mohammad Amir, 28-year-old Pakistan pacer has stated that the cricketing stars of India and Pakistan should keep politics aside and play together in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Mohammad Amir made his debut in 2009 and played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 49 T20Is. But he was suspended from 2010-2015 for allegations of spot-fixing by bowling deliberate no-balls during a test match against England. He returned in January 2016 and played in 2019 World Cup finishing as Pakistan’s highest wicket-taker.

Mohammad Amir: Politics Should Be Kept Aside, And It Would Have Been Great To Bowl To Indian Star Batsmen Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma

In an interview with Cricket Pakistan on Wednesday (25 November), Mohammad Amir was asked if he would love bowling against Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the PSL.

“We have always said, as players, that cricket, or any other sport, and politics should be kept separate. I love challenges like bowling to top-notch batsmen and it would have been great to bowl to them [Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma],” Mohammad Amir replied.

The left-arm fast bowler added that it would benefit cricketers from both nations if they could compete in the world’s top cricket leagues.

“Be it the IPL or PSL, it would be beneficial for players, from Pakistan and India, playing in these competitions in terms of exposure and quality of cricket,” Mohammad Amir continued.

In August 2010, the English newspaper News of the World published allegations that Mohammad Amir and fellow bowler Mohammad Asif deliberately bowled no-balls during Pakistan’s 2010 tour of England in return for payment from a betting syndicate.

On September 2010 the International Cricket Council announced that they had suspended Mohammad Amir under the provisions of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code. The statement from the ICC stated that the three players, including then skipper Salman Butt, were charged. On August 2015, Mohammad Amir was declared completely free to play all forms of cricket from September 2015.

Mohammad Amir Has Never Played In IPL

BCCI allowed cricketers from Pakistan to participate in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008. Eleven cricketers, including Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq, took part in the competition. However, Mohammad Amir has never gotten an opportunity to play in the league.

Only one former Pakistani cricketer, Azhar Mahmood, has played in the IPL after the BCCI banned them due to political tensions. It is important to note that Azhar Mahmood played for the Kings XI Punjab in 2012-13 and the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015 under a British passport.

Azhar Mahmood previously signed with the defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL) and had been released from his central contract. He played the last test in 2001 and last ODI in 2007.

Left-arm medium-pacer Sohail Tanvir was the first-ever Purple Cap winner of the Indian Premier League. His 6/14 against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is yet to be overhauled by any other bowler.

The Chinnaswamy franchise, owned by the United Spirits have, right from the first season, a strong team that can beat even the best teams in the world. The likes of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, and AB de Villiers have all been sensational for the club and have always produced some astonishing moments. In the 2013-season, RCB produced a sensational game as they took the Pune Warriors franchise to the cleaners and set them a target of 264 after being put in to bat.

Chris Gayle was at his peak as he scored an unbeaten 175 off just 66 balls in one of the most memorable innings in T20 cricket. A late 31 off just 8 balls from De Villiers made sure that they reach a target that will stay in the record books for a long time.

Sohail Tanvir Believes IPL Is Top T20 League In The World

The 35-year-old Pakistan left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir believes that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the top T20 league in the world cricket and the Pakistan players are missing it like him.

Sohail Tanvir was one of the few Pakistan cricketers who experienced the IPL as they played in the inaugural edition (2008). However, since 2009, the Pakistan players have not been allowed for the IPL due to mainly political issues between the two countries.

Sohail Tanvir not only played in IPL 2008, but he was also one of the top cricketers in that tournament. He served for Rajasthan Royals and played a major role for his team to win that tournament. Tanvir finished as the most wicket-taker in that tournament and became the first bowler to secure the Purple Cap in an IPL season. In that tournament, the left-arm pacer took 22 wickets in 11 matches (economy rate 6.46; average 12.09).

Recently, Sohail Tanvir has admitted that the IPL is the top T20 league in the world. While the big cricketers always want to participate in this tournament, Tanvir claimed that Pakistan players also regretted to miss this tournament. Tanvir also regrets on this missing chapter.

He told Gsports on the GTV News channel, “Yes as a professional cricketer there is regret that myself and other Pakistani players can’t appear in the IPL. It is realistically the top T20 league in the world. Which player would not like to play in it.”

Before the IPL 2019, Sohail Tanvir was holding the record of best bowling figures in an IPL innings. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he once managed the bowling figures of 4-0-14-6 against Chennai Super Kings at Jaipur on 4th May 2008. This record is now in the second place as Alzarri Joseph is on top of this list (3.4-1-12-6 for Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad).

I have not given up hope of getting a recall to the Pakistan squad – Sohail Tanvir

In the National T20 Cup 2019/20, while Northern won their first trophy, their left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir finished as the leading wicket-taker. He took 14 wickets in seven matches of this tournament that ran in October 2019. Also, in the last PSL (2019), he finished as the fifth most wicket-taker (15 wickets in 12 matches) and played a crucial role for his team Quetta Gladiators to win that trophy.

In PSL 2020, Tanvir will serve for Multan Sultans, and he is preparing for this tournament. As the senior players like Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik are still getting support from the selectors, Tanvir hasn’t given up his hope to return to the national squad. He wants to play the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup this year.

He added, “I have not given up hope of getting a recall to the Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup and World T20 this year. Then we also have another World T20 next year in India. The fact that the selectors have recalled Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik for the series against Bangladesh has given me lot of hope. It means seniors are still in contention.”

Sohail Tanvir last time played for Pakistan in April 2017 (against West Indies in Port of Spain T20I on 1st April 2017).
