The Sydney Sixers are an Australian professional men’s cricket team, competing in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League (BBL). Along with the Sydney Thunder, the Sixers are the successors of the New South Wales Blues who played in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. They play their home games at Sydney Cricket Ground.
Sydney Sixers started their journey in the BBL at their home ground – Sydney Cricket Ground – in style, beating Brisbane Heat before losing the next game to Hobart Hurricanes. They eventually ended the league stage with three consecutive wins to storm into the semifinal. In the semifinal, they beat Hobart Hurricanes by seven runss to enter the final. The Sixers went on to win the inaugural 2011–12 BBL, defeating the Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground.
Sydney Sixers had their task cut out as the defending champions. However, they just could not deliver as per the expectations. They started their title-defence on a good note by beating Sydney Thunder. However, they found themselves well out of contention to progress to the next stage after losing the next four games. They eventually ended the season at the seventh place after winning just three of their eight games.
The Sixers finished the league stage at the second place after winning 6 of the games. However, their hopes of winning the title again was ended by Perth Scorchers in the semifinal. In a rain-effected match, the Sixers target was reduced to 54 in 5 overs and the seemingly impossible target was realised when they fell short at 6/48.
After the disappointing loss in the final of the previous season, the Sixers entered the new season with renewed hopes. They signed some new faces whilst retaining the more experienced core group of players. The Sixers looked very good throughout the entire regular season winning five games, losing two games (to Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers) in regular time and losing an absolutely enthralling Super Over to the Melbourne Stars to make it to the semifinal.
In the semifinal, they crushed Strikers by 87 runs to set-up a mouth-watering clash with defending champions Perth Scorchers. But they once again ended up being heartbroken after losing the final on the last delivery of the game.
The Sixers started the season on a losing note with defending champions Sydney Thunder beating them by 36 runs. However, they bounced back in style by winning their next two games. But sadly for them, the rest of the season did not yield any more win as they finished at the bottom of the heap with just 2 wins.
After the disappointing campaign in the previous season where they had ended with the wooden spoon, the Sixers finished third on the BBL ladder after eight regular season games.
In the Semifinal against the Brisbane Heat, the Sixers won the game in a Super Over. The Sixers travelled to Perth for the Big Final after the first-placed Scorchers defeated the Melbourne Stars in their Semi Final. However, the Sydney Sixers fell short at the last hurdle, losing the Big Bash League final to the Scorchers by nine wickets at the WACA Ground. It was the second time in three years the Sixers made the final against the Scorchers but couldn’t grasp the title.
The seventh season of the competition saw the teams playing ten games instead of eight like the previous seasons. The Sixers had a disastrous start to the season as they lost their opening six games. They went on to win the remaining four games but the damage was already done. The Sydney-based outfit eventually ended at fifth position with 4 wins from ten games.
