Dec 5, 2020 at 1:50 PM
WWE does have some part-timers on their roster who only show up when the occasion is right. John Cena and Goldberg are both considered to be on that list who mostly performs for WrestleMania, SummerSlam, or Saudi Arabia PPVs. They have different reasons for being limited time performers in the company.
Cena’s Hollywood career skyrocketed in the past few years while Goldberg is an old-school wrestler who is happy to enjoy a short run in the company even after becoming a Hall of Famer. The similarity between these two is that they’re not done in the ring as performers. As of now though, WWE isn’t looking forward to bring them back.

Goldberg And John Cena Not Returning To WWE, Soon
According to the reports of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE doesn’t have plans to “hotshot” John Cena or Goldberg into a match right now. The latter was speculated to be in his due match with Roman Reigns which won’t be happening, either. The former WCW franchise was present in the ThunderDome to watch Reigns taking on Braun Strowman.
But Ringside News clarified that at the time they’re not trying to tease Goldberg vs Reigns, dream match. They’ve only focused on hyping the 2nd season premiere of SmackDown on FOX. His presence was demanded from the broadcasters who wanted to gather some legendary names to boost up the viewership.
It was also noted that Goldberg going into a match against WWE’s Tribal Chief still makes sense as their WrestleMania 36 encounter did not happen as per the promotions. However, there’s no backstage talk on carrying this match, out. Right now, WWE is only focusing on their current programming that doesn’t have room left for The Myth or The Franchise Player, John Cena.
While Cena is under contract with the WWE for as many years as he wants, Goldberg has a deal until 2023. As per his statements on the Pop Culture Show, he is obligated to perform in a couple of matches, per year,
“I am contracted with the WWE for the next two years through 2022/23. I’ve got two matches per year. I’ve exhausted my limit this year quite early on April the 5th with WrestleMania under these really weird circumstances.”
