John Cena wasn’t present on this week’s episode of SmackDown but WWE has announced that he will return to SmackDown on FOX during next Friday’s show. It was revealed that he will be live on next Friday’s episode from the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That August 13 episode is going to be the second last episode before SummerSlam 2021.

Over on last week’s SmackDown, John Cena signed the title match contract to confirm his SummerSlam title match opportunity from WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. Originally, Finn Balor was expected to compete in this match since his challenge was accepted by the champion, a couple of weeks ago. However, that match was never confirmed as Balor never got to put his signature on the contract paper.

Now, WWE is teasing that John Cena vs. Finn Balor match may happen soon over this SummerSlam title match opportunity, perhaps as early as next week. Over on this week’s SmackDown, the latter one was not happy with how Cena ended up snatching his SummerSlam contract, last week. He is still focused on that bigger title match.

John Cena built a recent beef with Finn Balor

Finn Balor also defeated Baron Corbin on this week’s SmackDown and afterward noted that he has a bone to pick over what happened last week. Balor clarified that he wants to challenge Reigns for the Universal Title, and if he has to go through John Cena to get there, then so be it. That being said, word is that we might end up seeing Cena vs. Balor, next week.

Fans chanted for John Cena throughout this week’s SmackDown closing segment with Reigns and Balor which ended with Reigns and SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos standing tall over Balor after a brutal triple-team attack.

Cenation Leader then appeared after the main show as he competed in the dark main event, which was the usual 6-man tag team match lineup, where he teamed up with The Mysterios to defeat Roman Reigns and The Usos (Cena pinned Jey Uso with an Attitude Adjustment to pick up the win).

John Cena and Finn Balor previously competed in both singles and multi-man matches. Balor won a Triple Threat while the sixteen-time world champion won in the singles contest. Thus, both these men have pinned each other and hold victories over one another.
