We have seen an infamous ‘Battle of Billionaires’ back at WrestleMania 23 where Donald Trump had a culmination of rivalry against WWE Chairman, Vince McMahon. A stipulation was set for the match that forced the loser name to have his head shaved. The one turned out to be none other than Vince McMahon, himself.
Now obviously, Donald Trump and Vince McMahon were not able to wrestle with each other inside the ring which is why they have to hire representatives who had to fight for them.
Bobby Lashley was the one who fought on behalf of Trump, who played the role of a babyface in this feud. On the other hand, Umaga was the one to represent The Boss, Vince McMahon who came up short during this interesting encounter.
However, the original plan around this matchup was much different. These were disclosed during a recent edition of Talk Is Jericho podcast. WWE Legend Chris Jericho and former WWE writer Court Bauer discussed Donald Trump’s storyline with Vince McMahon in 2007. Bauer went on to reveal how the earlier pitched angle was canceled at WrestleMania 23,
“Originally, it was supposed to be, instead of Bobby Lashley, we had Rey Mysterio in there. And then, the thought was [imitating Vince McMahon], ‘well, why would Donald pick him? He’d want someone big!’ And that’s why Bobby got it, and, unfortunately, Rey didn’t get that big WrestleMania payday.”
It’s sad to know that Rey Mysterio never got the chance to perform in such a huge main-event match at WrestleMania. A legend like Mysterio could have added another layer to the execution of the matchup.
But meanwhile, it turned out to be perhaps the biggest match of Bobby Lashley’s WWE career. He must have been very happy upon receiving a chance to compete on behalf of the current United States of America.
