One of the popular gimmick-based events for WWE Universe, Hell in a Cell could become extinct under the new regime of the WWE. The previously incorporated leadership of Vince McMahon was in favor of the idea of themed pay-per-views that produced gimmick matches pretty often. Over the years, WWE utilized such stipulations or gimmicks to churn out new events around those.

Hell in a Cell was one such event that had been criticized for using the stipulation even if it wasn’t needed. It now looks like that the new Head of the Creative Team in WWE, Triple H isn’t interested in continuing this tradition. Hence, he will be moving away from the current norm. Going by the recent reports, he will perhaps abandon the gimmick-based event altogether.

WrestleVotes recently spoke to GiveMeSport to confirm that Triple H will not be running the Hell in a Cell event from next year onward. However, being a popular gimmick, fans will still be able to see Hell in a Cell matches on WWE programming,

“The show itself, I think is completely dead. That match, from what I understand means a lot to Hunter, just think of the classics that he’s had in there. Roman Reigns & Jey so they’ve been feuding for six weeks, they got to be there now because the calendar says so… That’s not going to happen anymore”

Hell in a Cell to be excluded from the WWE schedule

If the report appears to be true then the 2021 Hell in a Cell event that took place last June would be the final edition of the gimmick-based event. Last year, it was headlined by Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins in a match that was discussed for a long time. The fans and critics showered their praise as Rhodes battled through a gruesome injury to compete in the match before moving into a hiatus.

Hell in a Cell was introduced as a pay-per-view event starting from the year 2009 due to its extreme popularity among the WWE audience. Since then, each year we have seen iteration of the event with the marquee match taking place inside the unforgiving steel cage structure. To date, 12 such shows took place and the 13th edition may not arrive, after all.

Recent reports have already claimed that WWE has canceled plans for the Day 1 premium live event/pay-per-view on January 1, 2023. Triple H apparently has a lot of changes planned for next year around the PPVs. One of those reported changes would be removing the gimmick-based PPVs. Per Wrestling Observer, The Game wants to rather bring more international shows like the Clash at the Castle or Saudi Arabia PPVs.
