Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg was originally supposed to take place two years ago at Wrestlemania 36 before the COVID-19 hit and changed the plans. On Night 1 of the event set from Orlando, Florida in April 2020, the latter name was scheduled to defend the Universal Championship against the top WWE superstar of this generation.
WWE started builds for the matchup on Smackdown, after Elimination Chamber but suddenly, Roman Reigns pulled out of that match a couple of weeks before the event due to COVID-19 and family issues. It was at the very last minute that he denied to be part of that taped edition of ‘Mania. He was then replaced by Braun Strowman, who went on to defeat Goldberg to win his first and only World Championship in WWE.
WWE 2K22: Paige And Hall Of Famer Unhappy About Getting Snubbed
A recent report from WWFOldSchool has now revealed that the original plan for Goldberg vs. Roman Reigns was obviously for the latter to defeat his predecessor in this Spear vs. Spear bout. Also, the current champion was actually supposed to ‘squash’ the Hall of Famer to become the new Universal Champion. Afterward, he would get meaner in his attitude which would make way for his eventual heel turn that happened later that year.
Roman Reigns defeated Goldberg at Elimination Chamber
Roman Reigns returned at WWE Summerslam 2020 by attacking Braun Strowman and The Fiend Bray Wyatt. Just a week later, he won the title in a triple threat also featuring the above-mentioned two names. With Paul Heyman by his side, Reigns would confirm his heel-turn during the title win at Payback PPV event.
It was noted by the source that it seems like this ‘squash’ plan was retained during their Elimination Chamber 2022 Title match. Then on Smackdown, Roman Reigns said the following during a sit-down interview with Michael Cole to hint at the match outcome,
“I’m gonna ‘Goldberg’ Goldberg.”
The bygone match is going to be Goldberg’s final match of his WWE contract. After Elimination Chamber, he’s isn’t scheduled to work any other date after that, as of this writing. He’s going to get a shoulder surgery done after his current contract expires which should keep him out of action for at least a few months.
Thus, Roman Reigns was always the predicted winner of this match who is now scheduled to face Brock Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania 38 (Night 2) for the Universal Championship.
