The Rock remains one of the greatest icons in modern-day pop culture. But there’s nothing to take away from the fact that he also is one of the greatest wrestlers to have ever stepped foot inside the squared circle. Before becoming an all-rounder icon he has done everything as a pro wrestler and now it could be time for him to become the owner of the WWE.
The Rock is one of the richest people in the United States and he is also considered the biggest box office attraction in the whole world. A couple of years ago, he acquired the XFL from Vince McMahon and now there are rumors that McMahon’s WWE could also belong to him although it might not be a good idea.
Stephanie McMahon Steps Down From WWE CEO Position After Vince McMahon Comeback
With Vince McMahon’s return to the board of directors, there are plenty of rumors that WWE is getting sold in the imminent future. Names like NBC’s parent company, Disney, Amazon, Comcast, AEW owner Tony Khan, and Saudi Arabia are in the mix to take things over from Vinnie Mac. Now, The Rock has entered the conversation as well.
However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the former WWE Champion can just outright buy anything he wants to. At least, it won’t be a good idea from a business perspective to acquire things in the WWE.
The Rock buying the WWE won’t be a smart move
PWInsider discussed the possibility of The Rock purchasing WWE and it was revealed that it would not be a smart move for him to buy the company as it would occur a huge amount of loss for him,
“He would need a lot of partners and/or financing and honestly I don’t think he would want to make the move. As mentioned above, the lion’s share of WWE’s revenue comes from TV rights.
If that market changes drastically and the partners change what they are willing to pay for WWE, the company’s value changes drastically. Since it will cost billions to buy WWE, that kind of downturn could be catastrophic for a non-content providing investor.”
Also, on a recent episode of the Buzzcast podcast, Matthew Belloni discussed how UFC’s parent company Endeavor is also being discussed as a potential buyer,
“As much as it’s a valuable media property, it is still considered a second-tier property in the sense that there are advertisers that still will not advertise on WWE. There is a little bit of radioactivity around it, much as there was with the UFC.”
Be it The Rock or anyone else, the belief is that Vince McMahon would take the right call in selling his company at the rightmost deal where he could also keep the controls to himself to a large extent. This is the reason why the Saudi Arabia authorities are also being speculated as potential buyers.
