Carmella went through the longest hiatus of her entire WWE career starting from the 2022 summer and lasting till the beginning of 2023. The almost six-month hiatus started after she competed in a triple threat match at a house show against Bianca Belair and Asuka in August last year.

Prior to that match, the top WWE Raw Superstar had multiple failed attempts in gaining Bianca Belair’s Raw Women’s Championship. Then in the house show, The EST of the WWE accidentally bumped heads with Carmella while doing a move that ended up resulting in a head injury.

The general belief was that WWE had to keep Carmella off TV as she was recuperating from the injury. However, there were always speculations about this lengthy absence. Then in September 2022, Carmella herself took to social media to share the heartbreaking news of going through a miscarriage. Apparently, this was the reason why she was not prepared to make her way back to the WWE.

Carmella was physically and mentally stressed by pregnancy loss

During a recent episode of the WWE After the Bell podcast hosted by her husband Corey Graves, Carmella talked about the ill impact of the incident on her overall well-being. It affected her mind and body which led her to think about her wrestling future and the impending return. Despite being a veteran in the ring, she was not sure about going back to 100% before dancing in the ring, again.

“I just wasn’t sure what that journey back to the ring would look like. Would I even be able to get my body back to where I needed to be? I wasn’t quite sure what it would look like to get back to WWE. Are people going to remember me? Are people going to want to see me back? What does that journey look like?” Carmella continued.

“And now looking back, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It really helped me take the time I needed to mentally and physically to get back to peak physical and in-ring condition.” (quotes courtesy People)

After showing up during the post-Royal Rumble 2023 episode of Monday Night Raw, Carmella quickly found herself back in the championship picture by winning a qualifying fatal-4-way match to compete in the Elimination Chamber match. But ultimately in the Chamber match, she tapped out to the eventual winner Asuka who got a shot to the Raw women’s champion Bianca Belair at Wrestlemania 39.
