ToggleWith WrestleMania 39 approaching closer, a lot of speculations are going on about the happening that could be in store on the show. Rumors suggest that WWE was set to introduce a new World Champion at the event but things didn’t go according to plans as WWE had to cancel The Rock from his earlier scheduled matchup against the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
Last year, reports revealed that WWE was actively pursuing The Rock for a match with Roman Reigns given that he had some free time in the schedule in early 2023. However, in January, The Rock informed WWE that he does not believe there is time for him to get ready for WrestleMania 39, this April. Following that, the earlier plans of the WWE had to be scrapped and backup plans were executed.

USA Network wasn’t happy with Raw not having any world title after WrestleMania 38
This also included a championship introduction getting canceled. It was back at WrestleMania 38 last April that WWE decided to unify the WWE and Universal Championships by putting the WWE and Universal Champion in a match.
Soon after that match, it was reported that the USA Network was unhappy about the move, given that Roman Reigns was treated as WWE’s sole World Champion, leaving the red brand without any top championship. Recently, on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that to resolve the issue, WWE planned Rock Vs. Reigns alongside a title launch going to be created at WrestleMania 39.
Cody Rhodes expected to become a new world champion at WrestleMania 39
It was hinted that the new title would allow Cody Rhodes to win on Night One, while Reigns would be free to defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against his cousin on Night Two. Meltzer also added that other names considered to be the winner of this new World Championship included Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins.
After the match between The Rock and Roman Reigns was canceled at WrestleMania 39, WWE avoided creating a new title for Rhodes vs. Reigns where a new champion is expected.
The American Nightmare is the current favorite to dethrone Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 but the current plans of WWE will still leave the company with one World Champion that may keep the USA Network or FOX officials unhappy. Rhodes recently hinted on social media about bringing back an old-school design for the world championship belt but there’s no confirmation if there’s a real plan for its introduction.
