WWE Day 1 main event has been booked in the form of the Universal Championship match from the Smackdown brand. Roman Reigns is set to defend the belt against Brock Lesnar in a rematch from Crown Jewel 2021. With Royal Rumble 2022 approaching closer, the question was that why’d WWE book this mega bout at a regular PPV event on January 1st.
It’s been reported that the WWE Day 1 rematch between Lesnar and WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns is likely being planned for WrestleMania 38. As noted earlier, the plan for the current Lesnar vs. Reigns feud is to set this up in a way so that feature a series of matches can go down.

Roman Reigns retained over Lesnar, with help from Paul Heyman and SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos, at WWE Crown Jewel in late October. The controversial finish set up the rematch at WWE Day 1 on New Year’s Day. In an update, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that that the upcoming bout is also designed to have a big finish where the fans would go on to clamor for yet another rematch.
WWE Day 1: How Brock Lesnar Vs Roman Reigns Will Be A Rubber Match
Wrestlemania 38 main event would be a WWE Day 1 rematch?
It was also noted that the final rematch between these two titans would be the WrestleMania 38 main event match. There is no confirmation available on what exactly the “big finish” for WWE Day 1 would be or whether this would cause some sort of stipulation for Lesnar vs. Reigns at the biggest event of the year.
There have been some speculations about a Lesnar vs. Reigns match at the 2022 WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view in this ongoing series of matches between the two. But now it appears that they will only wrestle at WWE Day 1 and WrestleMania 38.
The champion is the obvious favorite to retain at the upcoming PPV which led to the speculation that Lesnar would eventually earn the WrestleMania 38 title shot by winning the 30-Man Royal Rumble match in late January. As of now, this direction wasn’t noted in WOR’s report.
As of now, WWE Day 1 is scheduled for Saturday, January 1 from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia while Saturday, January 29 will mark the Royal Rumble event from The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Missouri. WrestleMania 38 will take place Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3 from the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
