WWE Day 1 will kick things off in a big way in 2022. The PPV making its debut on January 1, 2021, will be the first pay-per-view event of the next year which also serves as the next WWE Network specials for the main roster. The PPV event also brought a change to WWE’s usual schedule as it canceled the original TLC PPV listed for December.
On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that the WWE Day 1 PPV was an idea of WWE President Nick Khan. He mentioned that the current plan is for this event is to become an annual pay-per-view tradition in the WWE calendar.
Brock Lesnar Vs. Roman Reigns: Spoiler On WWE Smackdown Program
The report noted that December PPVs generally do not perform well, since the holiday season continues through this time. It was said that those have performed terribly or great, historically, depending on the lineup. WWE Day 1 needs to do well and this is one of the big reasons that the Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns match has been booked.
WWE Raw Legend Rey Mysterio Teases History-Changing Announcement
WWE is in hopes of making this one major event on the calendar and the Universal Championship match will perhaps help them to achieve the goal. Lesnar vs. Reigns is the biggest match possible for WWE Day 1, right now and hence the creative team proceeded to book it since adding it to the card instantly makes the show more interesting.
It was also noted by Meltzer that the creative team didn’t think the Royal Rumble PPV necessarily needed this match to happen. Plus, Lesnar vs. Reigns program is expected to continue following WWE Day 1 pay-per-view and more matches including a WrestleMania bout should be in the pipeline.
