Proving the reports of Fightful Select true, Goldberg returned to the WWE storylines over on the February 4 edition of Smackdown. As of now, the legendary superstar is booked to wrestle at the WWE Elimination Chamber event in Saudi Arabia. He will be challenging WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns for the title in a dream match.
WWE is billing this match as a ‘two years in the making’ bout since this one was originally scheduled to happen at WrestleMania 36 in 2020. But Reigns withdrew from the match and went into a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s been the champion since Payback on August 30 of that year and Goldberg, being a protected character, is the perfect name to dethrone him from the ongoing reign.

However, it’s unlikely that Goldberg will wrestler after Elimination Chamber due to his match quota being completed. The question remains whether he will be performing after this match. If the answer is negative then chances are also high that Reigns may end up retiring him.

WWE might re-sign Goldberg to a new deal
Dave Meltzer stated on Wrestling Observer Radio that he expects WWE to re-sign Goldberg meaning that Elimination Chamber won’t be the last for him. The source also noted that the challenger won’t defeat Reigns for the Universal Championship unless he agrees to a new deal.
Meltzer mentioned how important Goldberg is for the old-school crowd. WWE is currently limited to part-time legends who can wrestle. Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker are retired while Triple H may not be in action, anymore due to his recent surgery following a serious cardiac event. So, it’s very much likely that The Myth will be retained by Vince McMahon.
The belief is that the chairman will go to any extension to retain the legendary wrestler since he’s still in a good shape for mixing it up inside the squared circle. His matches tend to be short, anyway and he also wrestles only two or three times, per year which allows him to continue his stint for more years to follow.
Goldberg hasn’t given any updates about his retirement from in-ring action but the 55-year-old star did reveal that he needs shoulder surgery to fix the issues. It’s unclear at this point how much time, he will be on the shelf once the surgical procedure is performed.
