Dean Ambrose picked up his second Intercontinental Championship on the first episode of Smackdown Live in 2017. It was the beginning of a fresh feud between the Miz and Dean Ambrose on the blue brand and the lunatic fringe took ultimate revenge on the Hollywood A-lister after he insulted his real-life girlfriend, Renee Young on live television.
The segments from this rivalry were appreciated by the fans but there have been some major concerns over Ambrose amongst the WWE creative heads. A report from dailywerstlingnews.com stated the officials are worried that this Intercontinental title reign might cause Ambrose in near future, hampering his credibility as the main event star.
Ambrose indeed was the number one star on the Smackdown brand ever since the brand extension happened last year. He was drafted to the blue brand as the undisputed kingpin of the WWE. Ambrose then went into an exciting championship feud with the Phenomenal AJ Styles which was stretched to last year’s TLC PPV.
It was then when he got involved in a feud with the Miz and the IC title. Featuring on the mid-card scene straight from the main event scene was considered to be a demotion for the Lunatic Fringe and the officials are scared if Ambrose is being misused.
Dave Meltzer also expressed his concerns over Ambrose ,who is not being seen as the consistent main eventer in the WWE when he stated the following:
“For whatever reason, they never saw him as the top guy. And he did get the top guy position by default when Roman Reigns failed the drug test and they had to suspend him and they just needed a top guy and Cena was gone. So, Dean was the guy, but it wasn’t really their pick to make him the top guy, it was kinda by default and those kinds of guys usually end up back where they were before.”
However, Vince McMahon has full faith on him. He is sure that Ambrose will be capable of carrying the IC title with panache. At the same time, he will be back with full force whenever called to the main event scene.
