A massive championship change happened on Smackdown in recent times. R-Truth lost the United States title in a fatal-4-way match to Samoa Joe. This happened in a shocking manner as we have expected the least to see the former NXT Champion to get involved in this mid-card title scenario. Apparently, the creative team had planned a big match for him at Wrestlemania. It was likely that John Cena could become his opponent at the grandest stage of the year.
Big update on a Wrestlemania match over Smackdown
John Cena wishes happy Holi to India fans
If you followed the angle on Smackdown continued by R-Truth, you’ve noticed that he was constantly mentioning John Cena as his inspiration. This is why he was invoking the United States Open Challenge in the first place and lost it. So the storyline did indicate that this is just a created thread via which the franchise player of the company can make his return to the ring at Wrestlemania 35.
Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that the United States Championship change happened to eye a big matchup. R-Truth has mentioned the Cenation Leader as ‘the hero’ who could make his comeback to recapture this prestigious title. This would create a dream match where John Cena should have gone one-on-one against Samoa Joe on WWE TV for the very first time ever.
At this point, there’s no chance that we could see John Cena back on TV. He is busy filming the “Playing with Fire” movie in Vancouver, Canada. But he announced this week that he will be doing an “Elbow Grease” book signing in New York City during WrestleMania 35 weekend. This is a confirmation that he will be in the town during the biggest weekend of the year. With that being said, it might be also official that we will see him in a match on April 7th.
Even the United States Champion himself hinted this upcoming matchup against John Cena. While giving an interview with Kayla Braxton after Smackdown, he took a shot to the 16-time world champion by stating the following,
“I don’t pander to the masses of the unexceptional, and I sure as hell ain’t a man who loves John Cena. Hustle, loyalty, and respect? No, no, no. All my opponents will find is disrespect. For any man who has the audacity to come for the king and his crown. And to all you SmackDown Superstars who wanna lie awake at night, every night, having nightmares about the day you might step in the ring against me – rest assured boys, I’ll be along soon enough to make you all go night-night.”
