Rey Mysterio is always considered to be the Greatest Mask of all Time in the history of WWE or the entire professional wrestling circuit. He’s also the greatest high-flying star, according to many who keep on the merchandise sales always high. For all the rightful reasons, he is a legend in Mexico and beyond the Lucha Libre culture.
A lot of Superstars had the privilege to share the ring with Rey Mysterio and it appears that a Lucha Libre colleague was ready to bring an interesting storyline with him on WWE TV but Vince McMahon scrapped the idea, involving the mask. The former Lucha House Party member Kalisto was game to take away the greatest mask in WWE history, but that match has never happened. This is one regret he still has.
John Cena Vs. Edge Still A Possibility For WWE Wrestlemania?
Kalisto was released from WWE amid the COVID-19 pandemic-related budget cuts. Fans are awaiting his next move whenever the 90-day no-compete clause runs out. His time away from the company, he can speak openly about what Vince McMahon and co. never allowed him to do. Kalisto was down with a mask vs mask match idea with Rey Mysterio but The Boss wasn’t interested.

Rey Mysterio could have featured in a mask vs mask matchup
While speaking to Insight With Chris Van Vliet, the former Lucha House Party leader revealed that he pitched a match against Rey Mysterio with mask vs mask stipulation. Obviously, that idea had to go through McMahon Sr. and it didn’t. So we haven’t seen that match and neither the two masked Superstars collided inside the squared circle.
“My biggest regret is not pitching my idea to Vince. Pretty much the whole world knew except for Vince. [I wanted to do] a mask vs. mask match against Rey Mysterio. I had Rey’s blessing, Dominik’s blessing, everyone. They all loved it. I showed it to Paul Heyman too. Paul said ‘This is genius, do it.’ I was like let’s do this! It’s just such a good story, it’s my biggest regret not talking to Vince about it. Right before I was going to, I got released,” Kalisto continued about a potential angle with Rey Mysterio.
“I was prepared for anything, I had such a great story that nobody would have expected. So for Paul Heyman to say that’s genius, I got something. The writers, everyone loved it. I even showed it to Daniel Bryan and Edge, they loved it. But it’s my own fault. I should have gone [to Vince].”
That mask vs. mask match could have been interesting if WWE would have given it a try. Kalisto could’ve also been losing his mask in the process as he wasn’t likely going to win against legendary Rey Mysterio. There was no point in losing all the merchandising possibilities by showing Rey’s face. But at the end of the day, the quick-paced match never went down.
