This week’s WWE SmackDown was all set to witness a historic match where the NXT and main roster Women’s Tag Team Championships were scheduled to be unified. The match went down and we did receive a new unified tag champs in the form of Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler. The announcement was also made that the new champions will be defending their tag belts across all three brands of the WWE.
As seen during the match on WWE SmackDown, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler won the titles by defeating their scheduled opponents, the former NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn. The hard-fought win came after Baszler caught Fyre in a Kirifuda Clutch while Rousey locked in her signature armbar on Dawn, simultaneously and forced them to tap out at the same time.

Ronda Rousey could soon be NXT-bound in WWE
The win for the two former MMA competitors came at an interesting time after recent reports claim that WWE has a new role for Ronda Rousey. Apart from using her on WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown, the creative reportedly wants her to appear even on NXT to boost ratings. This is what Wrestling Observer Newsletter has informed in their report,
“There are plans for more major stars to work NXT like Rollins did this week. One name that was at least talked about was Rousey, or perhaps even having Rousey & Baszler defend the women’s tag titles there. But the goal is to use the main roster stars to increase the ratings, and the Rollins experiment was a huge success, so when something works in wrestling the idea is that you usually follow up on it.”

Shayna Baszler has become a three-time tag champ on WWE SmackDown
Since their TV return, Baszler and Rousey have been on a winning spree in the WWE. On the May 29 episode of WWE Raw, they emerged victorious in a Fatal-4-Way Tag Team Match to become the Women’s Tag Team Champions. Following the title unification on WWE SmackDown, they’re now the only women’s tag team champs on the WWE roster.
Plus, this title win on WWE SmackDown, makes Baszler a three-time WWE Tag Team Champion. This is her first reign alongside her longtime friend Rousey. On the last two occasions, she held the title with Nia Jax. Originally, Rousey and Baszler were reportedly scheduled to win the titles at WrestleMania 39 but an injury suffered by Rousey pushed back those plans.
