Ricochet defeated Santos Escobar (with Legado del Fantasma members) to win the WWE Smackdown World Cup 2022 Tournament in the main event of Smackdown. Escobar missed a Phantom Driver move and took Ricochet to the rope. The high-flyer put him down with a reverse Hurricanrana.

Moments later, Ricochet connected with a Superkick followed by the stunning 630-Splash finisher to gain the pinfall win. As a result, the former Intercontinental Champion was announced to be the WWE Smackdown World Cup 2022 winner who will now be back on track to regaining the mid-card title as a championship shot was rewarded to him.

As announced by the WWE, Ricochet will challenge Gunther for his Intercontinental Championship on the December 16, 2022, edition of Smackdown. Previously, WWE announced that the winner of the WWE Smackdown World Cup 2022 will receive a title match opportunity, and hence the reward was given to him. It now remains to be seen if The One and Only can capitalize on the chance.
It should be noted that Ricochet lost the Intercontinental Championship to Gunther, himself during a previous episode of WWE Smackdown, several weeks ago. Now, he claims to win the opportunity and the title as he is set to challenge the Imperium leader in just two weeks of time on WWE TV.

Ricochet previously bested Mustafa Ali and Braun Strowman, respectively in the first and semifinal match of the WWE Smackdown World Cup 2022 edition. Santos Escobar, on the other hand, defeated Shinsuke Nakamura and BUTCH in the first round and semifinals, respectively in order to head on to the finale.
The LDF leader and the One and Only then tore the house down on this week’s Smackdown that went down from the KeyBank Arena in Buffalo, New York. After all said and done, it was Ricochet who stood tall and became the new number-one contender for the WWE Intercontinental Title.
